Die Basketballerin hat auf GoFundMe eine Spendenkampagne gestartet – offiziell, um ihre Strafen aus der aktuellen Saison zu begleichen. Ganze 26.000 US-Dollar soll sie laut eigenen Angaben an die Liga zahlen müssen.
Auf der Plattform X teilte die Star-Spielerin den Spendenaufruf mit den Worten: „Ich könnte eure Hilfe bei meiner GoFundMe-Kampagne gebrauchen. Bitte teilen, unterstützen oder spenden – jede kleine Aktion zählt. Man sollte auch Spaß dabei haben, oder?“
[–>Trotz klarer Hinweise auf den Spaß-Charakter der Aktion nahmen viele Fans den Aufruf zunächst für bare Münze. Cunningham musste schließlich klarstellen: „Das ist ein Witz. Entspannt euch, ihr Clowns … Ich hab das Ziel extra auf 10 Millionen gesetzt. Es sollte offensichtlich sein, dass das nicht ernst gemeint ist.“
Cunningham erhielt in der für ihr Team abgelaufenen Saison der Frauen-NBA mehrere Geldstrafen – unter anderem wegen öffentlicher Kritik an Schiedsrichterentscheidungen in sozialen Medien sowie in ihrem Podcast „Show Me Something“. Eine weitere Strafe resultierte aus einer hitzigen Auseinandersetzung während eines Spiels mit Gegenspielerin Jacy Sheldon (Connecticut Sun). Nicht umsonst nennt man Cunningham auch „The Enforcer“ (Die Vollstreckerin).
Klar ist: Die Geldstrafen kann sie aus eigener Tasche bezahlen. In diesem Jahr soll sie rund 100.000 Dollar verdient haben.
