O ex-zagueiro e campeão mundial Fabio Cannavaro foi oficialmente anunciado como novo treinador da seleção do Uzbequistão, país que disputará pela primeira vez uma Copa do Mundo em 2026. O comunicado foi feito nesta segunda-feira (6) pela Federação Uzbeque de Futebol (UFF), através de suas redes sociais oficiais.
A entidade destacou o prestígio e a experiência do italiano, que chega para liderar a equipe já classificada para o torneio que será realizado nos Estados Unidos, Canadá e México, em um formato ampliado com 48 seleções.
“A Federação de Futebol do Uzbequistão assinou contrato com Fabio Cannavaro, um conceituado especialista, com três presenças em Copas do Mundo e campeão mundial em 2006”, informou o comunicado da UFF.
Um campeão do mundo à frente de uma seleção estreante
Aos 52 anos, Cannavaro é um dos nomes mais icônicos do futebol italiano. Capitão da Azzurra no título da Copa do Mundo de 2006, o ex-defensor conquistou também a Bola de Ouro e o prêmio de Melhor Jogador do Mundo da FIFA naquele mesmo ano — um feito raro para um atleta de defesa.
Agora, ele assume o desafio de comandar uma equipe asiática em ascensão, que vive o momento mais importante de sua história. O Uzbequistão garantiu vaga inédita para a Copa do Mundo de 2026, após uma campanha sólida nas eliminatórias da AFC (Confederação Asiática de Futebol).
A estreia de Cannavaro acontecerá já nesta semana, em dois amistosos preparatórios: o primeiro diante do Kuwait, na quinta-feira (9), e o segundo frente ao Uruguai, na segunda-feira (13).
