In 2010, LeBron James shocked the basketball world by announcing he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in an ESPN special titled “The Decision.” On Tuesday, that special is getting a sequel.
James teased the “decision of all decisions” Tuesday in a post on X. The video clip attached to that post features the Los Angeles Lakers star sitting down in a chair on the court. It’s meant to evoke James’ original decision, in which he sat in a chair across from reporter Jim Gray.
But just to make it obvious that’s what James was going for, he added the hashtag #TheSecondDecision to the post.

Turns out, Tuesday’s announcement had nothing to do with basketball. Instead, James parodied “The Decision” in a new ad for Hennessy. James acknowledged he trolled people with Monday’s post, sending out a few emojis while linking to the ad.
Given the open-ended nature of Monday’s post, there wass no way to know what James would announce Tuesday. Considering James will be 41 in December, though, speculation ran rampant that James would make an announcement about the future of his playing career. That didn’t happen.
James hasn’t been super forthcoming about the issue during training camp. When asked about retirement in September, James said he was excited to play for another season. He added that he knows the end of his career is “a lot sooner than later,” but failed to expand on that.

At least some fans believed a retirement announcement was going to happen. Tickets for the Lakers’ final home game of the season skyrocketed on Stubhub after Monday’s post, with the cheapest available sitting at $746 as of Monday afternoon. That number is lower as of Tuesday morning.
Despite his age, James continues to play at a high level. Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds with the Lakers. He helped lead the Lakers to the playoffs, where they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.
Given the nature of social media these days, however, it was always possible James’ post would be an ad or new partnership. It’s worth noting Tuesday is the start of Amazon’s Prime Day, something James has promoted in the past. The announcement had nothing to do with Amazon, but was still ad-related.

That probably disappointed some fans, but … well, so did the original decision.
