Superliga vznikla loni po kolapsu britské ligy. Letos v dubnu federace udělila licenci na 15 let konzorciu amerického obchodníka Marshalla Glickmana na provozování nové soutěže. Do ní se však devět klubů, jež založily superligu, odmítlo zapojit. Jejich zástupci tvrdí, že tendr federace byl napadením dominantního postavení superligy. BBF argumentuje tím, že superlize udělila jen dočasnou licenci a její fungování mělo pouze překlenout dobu, než udělí dlouhodobou licenci.FIBA uvedla, že britskou federaci suspendovala po důkladném prozkoumání situace, které zahrnovalo rozhovory se zástupci všech stran. V době suspendace nesmí BBF udělovat licence či uznávat národní mužské soutěže či posílat mužský národní tým do seniorských soutěží FIBA.
