João Fonseca confirma presença no Rio Open 2026

O jovem tenista brasileiro João Fonseca confirmou sua presença no Rio Open 2026. O torneio será realizado entre 14 e 22 de fevereiro, no Jockey Club Brasileiro, no Rio de Janeiro. Esta será a quarta participação do atleta no ATP 500 carioca. Segundo o tenista, teve papel decisivo em sua formação e no início da carreira profissional.

“O Rio Open representa muita experiência. Eu já fui como torcedor, sparring e foi onde joguei meu primeiro ATP. Criei muita vivência vendo os jogadores, foi onde me inspirou a jogar tênis. É um torneio que está no meu coração por me ensinar o que é o tênis do alto nível e o que eu precisava para chegar lá”, comentou João Fonseca.

Participações anteriores de João Fonseca no Rio Open

Em 2023, ainda como juvenil, Fonseca foi convidado para disputar a chave principal e estreou contra o eslovaco Alex Molcan, cabeça de chave número 9. Já em 2024, o brasileiro viveu seu melhor momento no torneio, chegando às quartas de final diante de seis mil torcedores na quadra Guga Kuerten. Na ocasião, impressionou ao vencer Arthur Fils e Cristian Garin, campeão do Rio Open em 2020.

A boa campanha em 2024 fez João mudar seus planos. Ele desistiu da ideia de jogar tênis universitário nos Estados Unidos e decidiu se dedicar integralmente ao circuito profissional. A escolha deu resultado: no início de 2025, derrotou Andrey Rublev no Australian Open e, pouco depois, conquistou o ATP 250 de Buenos Aires ao superar o argentino Francisco Cerundolo.

No mesmo ano, Fonseca retornou ao Rio Open como estrela, mas acabou eliminado na estreia diante do francês Alexandre Muller por 2 sets a 0. Mesmo assim, manteve o torneio como um dos mais especiais de sua trajetória.

“Minha história com o Rio Open é muito especial. É um torneio que está no meu coração por estar ao lado da minha casa. Minha família consegue ir, meus amigos também”, disse o tenista.

Além de Fonseca, o italiano Lorenzo Musetti, atual número 9 do mundo, também está confirmado na edição de 2026 do torneio. Portanto, traz a expectativa de grandes nomes na próxima edição.

João Fonseca pode enfrentar Djokovic no novo ATP de Atenas

Após a transferência do ATP 250 de Belgrado para Atenas, o torneio pode marcar um confronto histórico entre Novak Djokovic e João Fonseca. Isso porque o sérvio, atual número 5 do mundo e dono de 24 títulos de Grand Slam, lidera a lista de inscritos para a competição. O torneio será disputada entre os dias 2 e 8 de novembro de 2025.

O brasileiro, por sua vez, aparece como um dos jovens mais promissores do circuito e também está inscrito para o torneio. No entanto, ainda não tenha confirmado oficialmente sua participação. Caso ambos estejam na chave principal, há chances reais de que Fonseca enfrente Djokovic — o que seria o primeiro duelo entre os dois.

A mudança do evento para a capital grega ocorreu em meio a crises políticas na Sérvia e à própria mudança de residência de Djokovic para Atenas, junto com sua família. O torneio será o primeiro grande evento internacional de tênis sediado na cidade sob a direção de Djordje Djokovic, irmão do tenista.
