Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones was thought to have deactivated his social media accounts following a rough performance in the Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road. According to Jones via Chiefs beat writer Pete Sweeney, the accounts were deactivated before Monday’s game against the Jaguars.

Besides having just one tackle in the game, the biggest point of contention with Jones’ performance came on one of the final snaps of the game. On the play in question, a first-and-goal for Jacksonville from Kansas City’s 1-yard line, quarterback Trevor Lawrence takes the snap and is immediately tripped up by his right guard, stepping on his foot, hurling him toward the grass.

As Lawrence lay on the ground untouched, he then picked himself up, eventually scrambling in for a go-ahead touchdown, leaving 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars would go on to win 31-28 in regulation. During the play, Jones, the Chiefs’ three-time All-Pro defensive tackle, appeared lost and moved slowly on the play.

“I thought multiple times we had him. We’ve just gotta finish,” Jones said of the final play after the game. “We’ve gotta finish. We had multiple guys there that, we just gotta finish that play.

“It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles. I put it on us as a defense, we’ve gotta finish. We’ve gotta bring him down on that.”

Jones had already been under harsh scrutiny this season over lackluster results through the first five games. He’s been to the Pro Bowl in six consecutive seasons, yet has just seven tackles (four solo) and one sack through five games. The Chiefs have been far from great on either side of the ball this season at 2-3, but as the leader of the defense, criticism has landed at Jones’ doorstep.

“We’re going to continue to bounce back,” Jones said to reporters on Monday night. “We’ve got a quick week, quick turnover for the week coming up. I think this group will bounce back. I think we’re going to fix the errors that we can control, the penalties. Once we eliminate the penalties and play disciplined football, I think we’ll put ourselves in good position to win.”

During the 2024 offseason, Jones signed a five-year $158 million extension to stay in Kansas City, with $95 million of that deal being guaranteed. Jones will have an opportunity at redemption in Week 6 with another primetime matchup as the Chiefs take on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”
