Jordan Henderson wechselte im Sommer 2023 völlig überraschend von Liverpool nach Saudi-Arabien zu Al-Ettifaq. Der Deal löste einen großen Shitstorm aus. Henderson setzte sich während seiner zwölf Jahre in Liverpool stets für die Rechte Homosexueller ein.
Nun legt Henderson, der inzwischen wieder auf der Insel bei Brentford spielt, ein überraschendes Geständnis ab mit Blick auf seine Zeit in der Wüste.

Henderson: „Ich konnte mir nicht viele Spiele ansehen, schon gar nicht die von Liverpool. Also habe ich mir dafür wahrscheinlich den richtigen Ort ausgesucht, denn ich war auf der anderen Seite der Welt!“
Das Ende seiner Zeit an der Anfield Road hat den Ex-Kapitän noch lange danach mitgenommen.
„Liverpool zu verlassen war eine große Entscheidung und wirklich schwierig. Es war so lange mein Leben gewesen, und dann war es einfach so vorbei, sodass ich danach eine Zeit lang zu kämpfen hatte. Ich war so sehr daran gebunden und hatte einen großen Teil meines Lebens dort verbracht.
Und weiter: „Es fühlte sich wie eine Trennung an. Es war einfach schwierig. Und ich glaube, wenn man viele Spieler fragt, die einen Verein verlassen, nicht nur Liverpool, dann gibt es eine Zeit, die schwer ist. Aber mit der Zeit ändern sich die Dinge.“
Dann fügt der Engländer noch einen Satz an, der tief blicken lässt: „Im Nachhinein hätte ich vielleicht andere Entscheidungen getroffen. Aber damals habe ich so empfunden, und meine Entscheidung, nach Saudi-Arabien zu gehen, hatte viele verschiedene Gründe.“

Seit diesem Sommer läuft er wieder in der Premier League auf. Thomas Tuchel nominierte den Routinier für das anstehende Freundschaftsspiel gegen Wales und das WM-Quali-Duell mit Lettland. Dann winken ihm seine Länderspiele 86 und 87 für die Three Lions.
