„Rozhodla jsem se ukončit kariéru. V posledních měsících se moje motivace hodně houpala nahoru dolů, přitom druhá zmíněná varianta bohužel převažovala. Pořád jsem doufala, že tenhle pocit je jen dočasný a motivace se mi vrátí. Snažila jsem se přemýšlet pozitivně, ale bohužel nic nepomohlo,“ vysvětlila Fossesholmová svoje rozhodnutí v příspěvku na Instagramu.
A zaskočila tím i svoji dobrou kamarádku, legendu běžeckého lyžování Therese Johaugovou. „Bylo to pro mě obrovské překvapení. Takhle před sezonou udělala opravdu velké rozhodnutí,“ neskrývala šok v rozhovoru pro televizi NRK Johaugová, která se zprávu dozvěděla během soustředění ženského národního týmu v Hafjellu.
Podobně reagovaly i další kolegyně. „Byly jsme spolu během podzimu a zdálo se mi, že je v tréninku velmi dobrá a ve výborné náladě. Uronila jsem kvůli tomu i pár slz. Ale rozhodla tak, jak to pro sebe cítila nejlépe. Podporuju ji. Jsme dobré kamarádky,“ uvedla pětinásobná mistryně světa Heidi Wengová.
Velmi překvapen byl i expert Torgeir Bjørn. Obzvlášť proto, že se mu během nedávného Blinkfestivalu, kde vyhrála dva závody, zdála Fossesholmová ve výborné formě.
„Je to pro mě šok. Během léta z ní sálala radost a energie. Viděli jsme v ní jasnou kandidátku na nominaci pro olympiádu, a to jak pro individuální závody, tak pro norskou štafetu. Takže její rozhodnutí je pro nás velké překvapení,“ přiznal Bjørn.
Ve štafetě zaznamenala Fossesholmová největší úspěch své kariéry. Coby finišmanka na MS v Oberstdorfu 2021 dojela norskému týmu pro zlaté medaile. Další cenný kov už nejspíš nepřidá, podle svých slov se chce naplno věnovat studiu medicíny.
