The New England Patriots have finally started to see returns on their investment in Drake Maye, even though it took some time to assemble the right pieces around him.
Before their prime time clash with the Buffalo Bills, few expected the Patriots to cover the spread, let alone secure a win.

Still, Maye capitalized on his opportunities and led the team to a 23-20 victory.
This marked the Patriots’ first 3-2 start since the days of Tom Brady, and the former North Carolina quarterback’s performance is beginning to echo some of Brady’s early achievements.
After reigniting hope in the Foxborough fanbase, Brady had nothing but praise for the 23-year-old, confirming the growing comparisons to Josh Allen. “The comparisons to Josh Allen are very real,” Brady shared during a recent interview with Colin Cowherd.
For Maye, who admired Brady as a child, this recognition must be particularly meaningful. “I mean the greatest to ever do it,” Maye said following his first meeting with Brady after the 2024 NFL Draft. “He’s probably up there at No. 1 for me. Anytime you see the best to do it, it’s pretty cool.”
While Maye still has a long road ahead to fully justify those comparisons, defeating the current Super Bowl favorites is a solid start.
Patriots eye easier matchups ahead
The team’s upcoming schedule looks favorable, with back-to-back games against struggling teams. They’ll face the New Orleans Saints in Week 6 and the Tennessee Titans in Week 7, both of whom are averaging fewer than 19 points per game and have combined for only two wins this season.
Should the Patriots take advantage, they could hold a 5-2 record heading into Week 8, putting them in a strong position to chase their first playoff victory since 2018 – the final championship season of Brady‘s time in New England.
Prior to the season, New England’s Super Bowl odds ranked 17th in the league, but after Week 5, they are emerging as a surprising contender in the AFC.
For Maye and the Patriots, this win signals a major step forward, representing the closest the franchise has come to reclaiming its former glory since Brady left.
