MLB playoffs 2025: Cubs score 4 runs in first inning, hold off Brewers to avoid elimination in NLDS Game 3

The location changed for Game 3 of the NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs, but the scoring cadence didn’t. There were first-inning fireworks in the Friendly Confines, too.

In an NL Central division showdown that produced 13 first-inning runs in the first two games, the Cubs put up a four-spot in the opening frame Wednesday, igniting the Wrigley Field fans desperate for more playoff baseball.

They’re getting it.

The Cubs maintained their lead the rest of the way, even as the Brewers chipped away, and staved off elimination with a 4-3 victory. Milwaukee’s series lead is down to 2-1, and Game 4 is Thursday at Wrigley.

In the top of the first inning, the Brewers staked themselves to a 1-0 advantage, in large part thanks to Christian Yelich, who ripped a leadoff double off Cubs starter Jameson Taillon and then scored on a sac fly from Sal Frelick.

While the veteran Taillon ultimately recovered and turned in four innings of work, the same couldn’t be said for 25-year-old Brewers righty Quinn Priester. Pitching against the team he grew up rooting for, Priester battled command issues and gave up four runs and two walks in two-thirds of an inning before he was yanked.

Redeeming himself after losing an infield popup in the sun that advanced Yelich to third in the first frame, Michael Busch blasted a leadoff homer for the second time in the series. Not even swirling Wrigley Field winds could keep it out of the right-field bleachers.

The Cubs then loaded the bases, and Pete Crow-Armstrong smacked a two-out, two-RBI single to right, chasing Priester and forcing Brewers manager Pat Murphy into a bullpen game early.

In came Nick Mears, the first of five additional Milwaukee arms deployed Wednesday. Almost instantly, Mears fired a wild pitch that catcher William Contreras couldn’t corral while Crow-Armstrong swiped second. Ian Happ scored as a result, making it a 4-1 game.

From there, the Cubs didn’t score again, and the Brewers chipped away at their deficit throughout the night.

Jake Bauers delivered an RBI single in the top of the fourth, and in the seventh, he teed off on reliever Andrew Kittredge’s first pitch, sending a solo shot over the left-center wall and cutting the Cubs’ lead to 4-3.

Milwaukee threatened to break hearts in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, and Bauers came up again with the tying run 90 feet away. Fortunately for Chicago, Brad Keller blew by Bauers with a 97-mph, four-seam fastball up in the zone for a clutch strikeout.

With that, Keller secured the four-out save in the ninth and extended the Cubs’ playoff run at least one more day. Game 4 is scheduled for 9:08 p.m. ET Thursday in Chicago.

Tuchel’s England outclass Wales at Wembley to build momentum

Thomas Tuchel's England maintained their positive momentum with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday night. The Three Lions boss had been criticised for his squad selection for this month's internationals, with Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish among the high-profile absentees. But Tuchel wanted to build on the impressive win over Serbia in September - and his side did just that against their outclassed neighbours. England blew Wales away in the first 20 minutes, with Morgan Rogers tucking in Marc Guehi's cutback and Ollie Watkins tapping home at the back post before Bukayo Saka curled in a beauty to make it 3-0. It was the quickest England had reached that scoreline in 38 years. Player ratings England Pickford (7), Konsa (7), Stones (7) Guehi (7), Spence (7), Anderson (7), Rice (7), Rogers (8), […]

Chris Jones on Mistake in Chiefs Loss to Jaguars: ‘It’s a Teaching Point for Me’

Chris Jones took ownership of his mistake on the decisive play in the Kansas City Chiefs' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, when the three-time All-Pro defensive tackle thought Trevor Lawrence was down and stopped on the play, only to watch the Jaguars quarterback scramble to his feet and into the end zone.Lawrence's touchdown with 23 seconds remaining gave the Jaguars a 31-28 victory over the Chiefs."It's a teaching point for me. A little adversity. I can't think the play is over, you know what I mean?" Jones said Thursday, the day he typically speaks to local reporters. "It's a learning lesson. I thought it was over, thought we had him down."The Jaguars faced first-and-goal at the 1-yard line following a pass interference penalty. But they did not have any timeouts, so if Lawrence had been tagged down on […]

Indianapolis Colts’ Tyler Warren rewriting rookie history at the tight end position

Tyler Warren has been a chunk-play machine: His 17 first downs are the most by any rookie tight end in the PFF era. Dominance against zone coverage: Warren's 2.81 yards per route run against shell looks are the second-most among tight ends in the NFL. Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes The tight end position can easily be described as a slow burn upon entering the NFL. It has been conceptually viewed as one of the tougher positions to get a grasp of when transitioning from the college level to the pros. Even the most basic of numbers will back up that claim. Of all the tight ends drafted in Rounds 1-3 over the past decade, less than half have eclipsed a mere 100 yards over their first five NFL games. So, when somebody like Tyler Warren comes along and puts […]
