Referee Anthony Taylor spricht erstmals ausführlich über einen schlimmen Vorfall aus dem Jahr 2023. Er und seine Familie sind nach dem Europa-League-Finale zwischen Sevilla und Rom (4:1 n. E.) von einem Fan-Mob des italienischen Top-Klubs am Flughafen in Budapest angegriffen worden.
In einem Interview mit dem britischen Sender BBC sagt er: „Das war mit Sicherheit die schlimmste Situation, in Form von Anfeindungen, die ich je erlebt habe.“
[–>Und weiter sagt der Premier-League-Schiedsrichter: „Nicht nur, weil ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt mit Familienmitgliedern unterwegs war, sondern auch, weil es zeigt, welche Auswirkungen das Verhalten von Menschen auf andere haben kann – und ja, bei großen, hochkarätigen Spielen steht man immer unter besonderer Beobachtung. Aber selbst in einem Spiel wie diesem, in dem es eigentlich keine großen Fehler gab, versuchen die Leute, den Fokus zu verschieben, jemanden zu beschuldigen – und für mich ist das eine große Quelle der Enttäuschung, Frustration und Wut.“
Taylor wurde aufgrund eines nichtgegebenen Handspiels angefeindet. Star-Coach José Mourinho rief ihm nach dem Spiel in den Katakomben zu: „Das ist eine verdammte Schande.“ Vor dem Minibus des Schiedsrichters pöbelte er weiter, rief: „Herzlichen Glückwunsch, du Schande.“
Der Engländer, der unser EM-Viertelfinale 2024 gegen Spanien (1:2 n.V.) leitete, bereut im Nachgang, seine Familie mitgenommen zu haben. „Eigentlich hätte es eine ganz normale Heimreise nach einem schönen Finalabend sein sollen. Am Ende war es wirklich schlimm mitanzusehen.“ In der Regel fahren die Familien der Schiedsrichter nicht zu den Spielen, es sei denn, es ist eine besondere Partie.
Mourinho wurde nach dem Eklat für vier Europapokal-Spiele gesperrt, zudem wurde der Klub damals zu einer Mega-Geldstrafe von 135.500 Euro für das Fehlverhalten seiner Fans beim Halbfinale und dem Finale verdonnert.
