Sehili se rozhodl překonat dosavadní rekord Němce Jonase Deichmanna, který v roce 2017 přejel trasu z Lisabonu do Vladivostoku o takřka 18000 kilometrech za 64 dní a dvě hodiny.
Francouz se rozhodl pro úplně stejnou trasu. Jenže právě tady nastal problém. „Nezvolil jsem Vladivostok jako konečný bod svého putování sám, prostě to bylo cílové místo předchozího rekordmana, takže jsem ho musel zvolit také,“ vysvětloval pro ruskou agenturu RIA Novosti.
Do cíle Sehilimu zbývalo pouhých 170 kilometrů a byl blízko k vylepšení času. Jenže místo rekordu a návratu domů si dvouměsíční putování nechtěně prodloužil. Čínské úřady mu totiž podle deníku L’Équipe odmítly umožnit vstoupit do Ruska přes plánovaný hraniční přechod jinak než vlakem, což se ultracyklistovi nezamlouvalo, jelikož by to zneplatnilo jeho pokus o rekord.
Sehili se proto rozhodl zariskovat a pokračovat na kole. Nejprve skrze zalesněný terén, poté podél železniční trati až k ruské celnici. Tam byl ovšem zadržen. „Rozhodl jsem se projet Eurasii na kole, protože se mi líbila ta myšlenka, že mohu jet tisíce kilometrů a nic mě nezastaví. Zastavím se teprve tehdy, když uvidím moře a dál už to nejde. Právě ta délka cesty pro mě byla výzvou. Dojet na konec světa, kam už dál cesta nevede,“ líčil jezdec.
Avšak jeho pouť skončila začátkem září neslavně, cesta totiž nevedla ani do Ruska. Sehili zůstává ve vazbě a je obviněn z neoprávněného překročení státních hranic, za což mu hrozí až dva roky vězení. Na začátku října soud zamítl jeho odvolání, Francouz tak zůstává ve vazbě nejméně do 8. listopadu, dokud nebudou vyřízena další odvolání.
Šampion řady vytrvalostních závodů tak z východu Ruska neodjede s rekordem, ale pořádně krutým ponaučením. A navíc zatím ani netuší, kdy se bude moct vrátit domů.
