<!--> [--> Michael Cohen College Football and College Basketball Writer <!--> --> COLUMBUS, Ohio — Deep within Ohio Stadium, where they were temporarily shielded from a raucous crowd of more than 107,000 fans still delirious with post-national championship delight, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and his polarizing quarterback, Arch Manning, sat in the visitor’s locker room studying film. It was halftime of college football’s most anticipated season opener in ages, a game that pitted the top-ranked Longhorns against third-ranked Ohio State in a rematch of last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal, and the two leading figures in the burnt orange brain trust were in disarray. Manning, making the first road start of his highly scrutinized career, had labored through the opening few possessions against the freshly unveiled defense of coordinator Matt Patricia, the former head coach of the Detroit Lions and noteworthy disciple […]

UNLV Defender: ‘Nothing Really Sticks Out’ About UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava

The Nico Iamaleava era is off to a worrisome start for UCLA, and its Week 2 competition is rubbing it in."Honestly, nothing really sticks out to me about him [on tape]," UNLV Rebels defensive back Aamaris Brown said about Iamaleava on Monday. "You know, in the past there's been talk about 'five-star this, five-star that.' I have been around plenty of five-star and four-star [players], it don't scare me. I have played competition higher than them, including Alabama and all that. ..."Going against a guy like Nico, there's no surprise, no excitement or nothing like that."Last week, UCLA was drubbed at home by former Pac-12 rival Utah, 43-10. In the loss, Iamaleava totaled 136 passing yards, 47 rushing yards, one passing touchdown, one interception and a 107.8 passer rating, while completing 50.0% of his passes. A Star Is Born: Bryce Underwood’s Debut Shows He Can Raise Michigan’s Ceiling

<!--> [--> Joel Klatt Lead College Football Analyst <!--> --> Bryce Underwood didn’t look like a freshman in his Michigan debut — he looked like the future. The Wolverines’ 34–17 win over New Mexico wasn’t flawless, especially on defense, but Underwood stole the show. The true freshman quarterback was composed, confident, and in command — especially during a two-minute drill before halftime that ended in a touchdown. He threw for 72 yards on that drive alone and finished the day 21-of-31 for 251 yards and a score.Let’s face it: That stat line and performance were a lot better than what Michigan got at quarterback last season. That was apparent on Underwood’s 39-yard completion to Channing Goodwin on a third-and-14 play on that aforementioned drive prior to halftime. He also didn’t need to show us his rushing ability, which I really think […]

Bill Belichick’s UNC Debut Exposed Flaws — But It’s Too Soon to Panic

Bill Belichick's debut as North Carolina's head coach might have been the worst game of his head coaching career. The 48 points UNC gave up to TCU on Monday night were more than any Belichick-coached team gave up in any game during his 29 seasons as an NFL head coach. The 48-14 final was also tied for the second-largest margin of defeat in Belichick's head coaching career. After Belichick's Tar Heels committed a multitude of errors that allowed the Horned Frogs to score 41 straight points in Monday's game, FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt admitted that he's a bit concerned about UNC. However, he has some hope that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach can work some of his magic, while getting some scheduling luck, to right the ship in Chapel Hill. "Am I worried about North Carolina? Yeah, a […]

Vanderbilt LB, Ex-Hawaii QB Among College Athletes Suing NCAA Over Redshirt Rule

Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson and former Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager are among 10 plaintiffs suing the NCAA over its redshirt rule that puts restrictions on the five years the athletes have to practice, play and graduate from college. The class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee alleges the NCAA violates U.S. antitrust laws with how its redshirt rule covers playing time for athletes during five seasons of eligibility. The lawsuit includes seven other named plaintiffs and potentially thousands of current and former NCAA football, baseball and tennis players."We are not challenging the NCAA’s rule limiting players to five years of eligibility to play college sports or the concept of a defined eligibility period generally," co-lead attorney Ryan Downton of the Texas Trial Group said in a statement."But the NCAA has no basis to prohibit […]

Oregon’s Dan Lanning on Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy NIL Dig: ‘We Spend to Win’

Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy has provided the No. 6-ranked Oregon Ducks with bulletin board material ahead of their Week 2 matchup in Eugene."We spent around $7 million over the last three years, and I think Oregon spent close to $40 [million] last year alone," Gundy said on his weekly radio show. "That was just one year. Now, I might be off a few million. What I'm saying is they're spending a lot of money. There's some schools that are doing that."Gundy also expressed that there's "chatter" among coaches that out-of-conference scheduling "should be based on the financial situation for each school."Oregon head coach Dan Lanning responded."I've got a ton of respect for Coach Gundy. Ultimately, how blessed are we being at a place that's invested in winning? If you want to be a top-10 team in college […]

Big Ten Football Power Rankings: Ohio State Leads the Way After Statement Win

<!--> [--> Michael Cohen College Football and College Basketball Writer <!--> --> The game everyone wanted to see took place at Ohio Stadium on Saturday as No. 1 Texas visited No. 3 Ohio State in a rematch of last year's College Football Playoff semifinal. It was a clash between two of the sport's biggest brands and an early tussle for supremacy between the SEC and the Big Ten, the preeminent conferences in an ever-changing landscape. When the dust finally settled, the Buckeyes emerged from this titanic showdown unscathed, thanks in large part to an exceptional defensive effort and one timely touchdown throw by sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin. The Longhorns, meanwhile, were left to ponder what their future holds following a disappointing performance from Arch Manning, no longer considered the Heisman Trophy favorite. That result puts Ohio State comfortably atop the Big Ten […]
