PFF Grades and Data: Key insights for every NFL Week 5 game

Christian McCaffrey to step up in San Francisco: McCaffrey is the only player to surpass 100 touches so far this season, and his workload shows no signs of slowing down with the 49ers dealing with injuries at wide receiver and tight end. He’s been especially effective as a receiver out of the backfield, leading all players at the position in receptions (23), yards (219) and first-down conversions (8). Puka Nacua is off to a scorching start: Nacua has been especially dangerous on in-breaking routes, where he leads the NFL with 22 catches for 261 yards and a 94.5 receiving grade. The next closest receiver is Zay Flowers with 12 catches on in-breakers. The 49ers, however, have done a strong job limiting those routes, allowing just 182 yards on in-breakers, the fifth-fewest in the league. NFL Week 5 is here, and […]

Ranking the NFL’s highest-graded run blockers and defenders in Week 4

Darian Kinnard stepped up in place of Zach Tom: After playing just 28 snaps last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kinnard made the most of his first career game with at least 30 snaps — earning the highest run-blocking grade among all tackles in Week 4. Maxx Crosby was everywhere for the Raiders: The star edge defender finished as the fifth-highest graded edge defender in Week 4 and made an impact both as a pass rusher and run defender. Crosby recorded two run stops with an average depth of tackle of -0.5 yards, consistently disrupting plays behind the line of scrimmage. Estimated Reading Time: At PFF, the run game matters just as much as the pass game, and every play is meticulously graded. Each week, we’ll be looking at the highest-graded run blockers and run defenders from each position. OFFENSE […]

2025 NFL defensive line rankings ahead of Week 4: The Cleveland Browns continue to dominate

The Browns’ defensive line continues to hold the top spot in overall, run defense and pass-rush grades: The unit has earned a 90.5 overall grade, led by Myles Garrett at 92.9. Maliek Collins has been dominant on the interior with a 90.2 grade — seventh-best among interior defenders — while seven Browns defenders have overall grades of 71.5 or better. The Jets are shutting down the run: The Jets have led the NFL in run stops for two consecutive weeks and now sit atop the league in total for the season. Quinnen Williams leads all players in run stops (16), earning a 92.3 run-defense grade and an average depth of tackle of -0.08 yards. Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes The defensive line is the heart of any successful defense, tasked with both disrupting the opposing quarterback with a pass rush […]

PFF Advanced Coverage Grade: Ranking the best defenders in the NFL ahead of Week 5

It’s never too early to start preparing for next season, and for PFF, that means looking at ways to improve PFF Premium Stats. Last season, we presented a metric called “Advanced Coverage Grade,” which adds even more context to PFF's traditional coverage grade. What is Advanced Coverage Grade? Advanced coverage grade uses machine learning to map the separation allowed on a play to the expected PFF coverage grade the player would have earned had they been targeted. This system also takes into account the difficulty of the assignment and the situation when making that assessment. The variables considered for assignment and situation include play position, player assignment within coverage, overall coverage scheme, safety rotation, press coverage, route depth and play action. Going old school, this is a +/- grading system, though 0 doesn't necessarily represent expected or average results.

2025 NFL cornerback rankings ahead of Week 5

Jourdan Lewis is having a career year: For the second straight week, Lewis leads all defenders in advanced coverage grade. A PFF favorite during the 2017 NFL Draft process, Lewis had an up-and-down run in Dallas before putting together a career year in 2024, finishing seventh in advanced coverage grade. Now with a new team, he ranks third in PFF coverage grade and fourth in positive grade rate — making him look like one of the best free-agent signings of the 2025 offseason. Jacob Parrish providing early returns: Parrish ranks second among all NFL cornerbacks in advanced coverage grade and leads the league with an 87.5% positive grade rate. Parrish has recorded seven pass stops and has allowed just 60 yards into his coverage area. If quarterback is the most important position on the football field, then limiting the effectiveness […]

Puka Nacua’s Historic Start: The numbers behind one of the best receiver stretches in PFF history

One of the most prolific starts in league history: Nacua's 98.3 PFF receiving grade is the highest grade PFF has ever awarded to a wide receiver who has started each of the first four games of a season. No type of defense is safe: Nacua leads the league in yards and receptions against both zone and man coverages. Estimated Reading Time: 9 minutes Through just four weeks of the 2025 NFL season, Puka Nacua has already built more than 100 yards of breathing room atop the receiving yardage leaderboard. Nacua is already halfway to a 1,000-yard season, and is well on pace to become the first ever player to amass over 2,000 receiving yards in a single season. Of course, Nacua maintaining this blistering early-season pace would be an extreme feat. Even after tallying 500 yards this young in the […]
