Die Orlando Magic bezwingen den amtierenden Meister aus Boston – angeführt von einem überragenden Franz Wagner (23). Der deutsche NBA-Star übernimmt in der entscheidenden Phase die Verantwortung, trifft zwei wichtige Korbleger und sichert Orlando den 95:93-Heimsieg gegen die Celtics. Damit verkürzt Orlando die Play-off-Serie auf 1:2.

Auch bei den zwei Körben in den letzten Minuten vor dem Ende konnte er den deutschen Weltmeister nicht aufhalten.

Unterstützt wurde Wagner von Paolo Banchero (29 Punkte), der Orlando früh auf Kurs brachte. Dahinter klaffte jedoch eine große Lücke: Nur Center Carter Jr. punktete ebenfalls zweistellig (10 Zähler). Dafür dominierte er unter den Brettern mit 12 Rebounds, davon 6 offensiv.
Entscheidend für den Erfolg der Magic war ihre enorme Physis. Boston kam offensiv kaum ins Rollen, leistete sich ganze 19 Ballverluste. Besonders bitter für die Celtics: Im dritten Viertel, sonst ihre Paradedisziplin, gelangen nur 11 Punkte – bei katastrophalen 3 von 17 aus dem Feld.
„Wir haben das ganze Jahr so gespielt und ich denke, wer aggressiver spielt, wird diese Serie gewinnen“, sagt Wagner über den Ausgang der Serie.
Bosten fehlte die Tiefe. Beschreibend: Für 75 Prozent der Celtics-Punkte waren nur drei Spieler verantwortlich. Jayson Tatum lieferte starke 36 Punkte ab, Jaylen Brown 19 und Derrick White erzielte 16 Punkte. Von der Bank kam zu wenig Hilfe für die Superstars.
