Mike Tomlin‘s got Steelers fans buzzing with his latest comments about Aaron Rodgers. On April 26, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach appeared on NFL Network and revealed he’s had “really productive talks” with the four-time MVP quarterback, who’s a free agent after parting ways with the New York Jets.
“That’s certainly a possibility,” Tomlin said when asked about Rodgers joining the team, but he played it coy, adding, “I’m not going to forecast the ifs and whens regarding not only him, but any other potential free agent.” X users are hyped-“Rodgers to the Steelers? Let’s go!” one fan tweeted-while others wonder if Tomlin’s keeping his cards close.
Rodgers, 41, is coming off a 2024 season with the Jets that ended in a 5-12 record, but his stats still impress-3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. After the Jets announced a post-June 1 release, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rodgers became a hot commodity.
“We’ve had really productive talks with him, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know him,” Tomlin shared, hinting at a potential fit. The Steelers, who drafted Ohio State QB Will Howard in the sixth round, are clearly exploring veteran options-Rodgers could be the answer to their 2024 quarterback woes, where they ranked 25th in QBR.

The competition’s stiff, though-Rodgers has offers from the Steelers and the New York Giants, with the Giants’ deal reportedly more lucrative. “Rodgers ultimately would like to land with the Minnesota Vikings,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic noted, but the Vikings’ interest isn’t confirmed.
“Tomlin and Rodgers together would be electric,” an X user posted, dreaming of the coach-QB combo. Tomlin, who previously set a training camp deadline for Rodgers’ decision but later backtracked, is now focused on team development-though Rodgers’ 10 Pro Bowl nods make him a tantalizing option.
Rodgers’ potential move isn’t the only QB chatter in Pittsburgh. “To be quite honest, I don’t know that I meant that specifically for him,” Tomlin said of the deadline, keeping his options open. With Rodgers’ experience-30th in completion percentage in 2024 but a proven winner-the Steelers could get a major upgrade, but Tomlin’s staying mum on the timeline for now.
