V Rangers už Sullivan působil v letech 2009 až 2013 jako asistent Johna Tortorelly. Nyní v New Yorku nahradil Petera Laviolettea, který byl odvolán poté, co s favorizovaným týmem nedokázal postoupit do play off.
Pittsburgh Sullivan vedl od prosince 2015 a mistrovskou trofej s Penguins získal v letech 2016 a 2017. V posledních třech sezonách s nimi ale skončil už v základní části. Bývalý útočník má za sebou také dvě sezony na lavičce Bostonu.
„Je jedním z nejlepších hlavních trenérů v NHL. Když jsme zjistili, že je volný, bylo to pro náš tým nejlepší řešení. Rád vítám Mikea zpátky v Rangers,“ řekl generální manažer Chris Drury.
Sullivan byl také jmenován trenérem americké reprezentace pro olympijské hry v Miláně a Cortině d’Ampezzo v příštím roce. Výběr USA letos již vedl na prvním ročníku Turnaje čtyř zemí, kde s ním získal stříbrné medaile.
