After struggling in this area and aiming to turn things around, the Kansas City Chiefs have a new running back who they hope will elevate their game following a low point in Super Bowl LIX. Brashard Smith, selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, brings versatility that could be key to the “rebirth” of Andy Reid‘s squad.

The former SMU running back offers depth to the roster but must first earn his spot, though many believe he has a strong chance of making the team.

Brashard Smith Could Transform the Chiefs’ Offense

Smith is fast, explosive, and, in today’s ultra-competitive NFL, his reliable hands for catching passes-thrown by one of the league’s elite quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes-set him apart. His dual-threat ability makes him a unique asset.

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected Isiah Pacheco in the seventh round, and he has since solidified himself as the starting running back, a role he hasn’t relinquished. Smith, who many felt should have been drafted earlier, was still available when Kansas City’s turn came in the final round.

Last season, the Chiefs‘ ground game was lackluster, and they’re now exploring ways to revitalize it in 2025. Adding Smith to the mix could take their rushing attack to new heights and keep fresh legs on the field.

The Chiefs have already kicked off their rookie minicamp, and Smith shared his thoughts on his first experience at the team’s facilities:

“I expected to come in and learn and pick up from all the coaches and stuff. So, for sure,” said Smith. “I wouldn’t say harder, it’s more just you have to learn a lot. It’s a lot you have to learn, I would say as far as the playbook. I feel like it will come natural.”

“I wouldn’t say harder, it’s more just you have to learn a lot,” the SMU alum said about working with Andy Reid and his playbook. “It’s a lot you have to learn, I’ll say as far as playbook, so getting everything down as far as the playbook, then I feel like it’ll come natural for sure.”

There’s no doubt that if Smith shines in this minicamp and during training camp, he could become a special piece for the Kansas City Chiefs as they seek redemption in the upcoming season.
