Kevin Stefanski begins to win over Shedeur Sanders in the face of rumors he didn’t want him on the Browns
Shedeur Sanders‘ plummet in the 2025 NFL Draft shocked everyone in football as the 23-year-old only went in the fifth round to the Cleveland Browns. However, Kevin Stefanski has made it clear: draft status holds no weight when it comes to being starter.
The ex-Colorado Buffaloes star was finally picked 144th following concerns of his off-field personality, with a perception of arrogance and that of a man who doesn’t prioritize football.

Other issues were also about his time holding the ball in the pocket and apparent lack of ability to make deep throws, yet the Browns proved to be the ones to take a chance by bringing him to the Huntington Bank Field.
But for anyone thinking they’ve already made it, Ohio could prove a shock as the 43-year-old HC warns his rookies just because they got drafted, it doesn’t mean they’re on the team.

“You have not made the team,” Stefanksi told the rookie class. “No one will be given a role. It doesn’t work that way.
“You will earn a role, and you’ll earn that role based off what you do in this room. In your position. Meeting room. In the weight room, out on the field, in this building, that’s what you’re doing. Earn that role.”
Sanders, who led the FBS in completion percentage and was known for his ball security in college, fell sharply in the draft despite strong statistics thanks to those claimed off-field problems.
So Stefanski could be keen to send a message that nobody has a personality bigger than the team, particularly to Shedeur if those claims did actually turn out to be true behind closed doors.
Why is Shedeur Sanders not rated?
Whilst questions about the youngster’s deep-ball proficiency, limited mobility, and high sack rate were frequently mentioned, the main culprit may have actually been his father.
Deion Sanders, the NFL Hall of Famer who coached him at the Buffaloes, made very vocal claims about wanting his sons and top players from Colorado to land only with certain franchises.
He even suggested he would take a hardline stance if that didn’t happen by making his players refuse to play, much like Eli Manning did with the then-San Diego Chargers. Nobody wants an outside messing with their QB.
Additionally, the lack of a traditional agent was cited as a problem in Shedeur’s draft preparation. Although other players like Caleb Williams and Lamar Jackson skipped conventional representation, they had better pre-draft prospects and could afford to.
It ultimately led to the slump and even the Browns picked Dillon Gabriel earlier in the draft, meaning Sanders now joins a crowded quarterback room with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett already there.
And it could be an up-hill battle. At rookie minicamp, reps were split between Gabriel and Sanders, with the Oregon Ducks graduate taking the initial snaps; so Shedeur seems fourth in the pecking order.
