Brittney Griner is entering a new era in her life and career after enduring one of the most challenging ordeals any professional athlete has faced.
The WNBA star, who spent most of 2022 detained in a Russian prison, is not only preparing to suit up for a new team but also redefining her public image with grace and resilience.
Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in early 2022 after Russian authorities claimed she was carrying cannabis oil. She was eventually released in December as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia, which saw convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout returned to Russian custody.
Her case captured international attention and ignited conversations about diplomacy, athlete advocacy, and criminal justice abroad.

Since her release, Griner has demonstrated a renewed appreciation for her life, career, and country. This shift was evident when she fought back tears during the national anthem after Team USA’s dramatic 67-66 victory over France in international play-earning the women’s team its eighth straight gold medal. Griner, who previously voiced criticism of the national anthem, now appears to carry a deeper emotional connection to it.
“I’m just grateful,” she said in past interviews when asked about her changed perspective.
That gratitude now fuels her return to the WNBA and a fresh start with a new team, marking the first time in her professional career that she will not be suiting up for the Phoenix Mercury.
Griner’s voice has shocked some
Ahead of the upcoming season, a video of Griner speaking during the Unrivaled league-an offseason competition featuring top women’s basketball players-resurfaced online. While the video’s content was positive and focused on the game, many viewers were quick to fixate on Griner’s naturally deep voice, reigniting tired speculation and personal attacks on social media.
“She’s 1000% a woman. Followed her since Baylor,” one commenter wrote in her defense.
However, others posted crude jokes and baseless conspiracy theories, questioning her identity and making inappropriate remarks about her appearance.
Despite the negativity, Griner continues to rise above public scrutiny. Her supporters emphasize her trailblazing athletic record, her role in growing women’s basketball, and her strength in facing adversity. After all, her focus now is on the future-one filled with basketball, advocacy, and personal healing.
Griner’s return to the WNBA is more than just a comeback-it’s a statement. She’s back not only as an athlete but as a symbol of resilience, representing the power of second chances and the will to move forward, no matter how turbulent the past may be.
