The visit to the White House is one of the most cherished traditions for championship-winning teams and their fans. However, these events aren’t always seamless; sometimes, misunderstandings and disagreements can arise, as recently experienced by Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.
The history between the Trump administration and the Eagles is complicated. In 2018, when Philadelphia won its first Super Bowl championship, circumstances led to the cancellation of the traditional visit. This year, following the franchise’s triumph in Super Bowl LVII, a similar outcome was nearly repeated.
Although the visit ultimately took place, some players, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and A.J. Brown, declined the invitation. Brown, however, has just broken his silence, explaining the reasons for his absence.
Why didn’t A.J. Brown attend the White House visit?
During a press conference on Tuesday, February 20th, Brown revealed the reasons for his absence. “I had a personal reason I was dealing with that day,” the receiver explained. “It wasn’t about politics or who’s in office or anything. I just had something personal going on with my family.”
Neither players nor teams are obligated to visit the White House after winning a championship; the visit is entirely optional. This was clarified by Eagles owner Jeff Lurie after this year’s Super Bowl win. Lurie explained that if they received an invitation, the team would accept it, but individual players were not required to attend.
The visit was a success
As Lurie indicated, when the presidential invitation arrived, the team readily accepted. At the event, President Donald Trump congratulated the franchise on their victory and even praised the “tush push,” the controversial play that is a key part of the team’s offensive strategy and resulted in a touchdown during the February game.
Now that some details from that visit are coming to light, it’s worth wondering what else we’ll learn as time goes on. Surely there will be material for more stories and countless anecdotes that fans will be eager to discover.
