Malo Gusto, el escudo ‘antiBetis’ del Chelsea: “Queremos ser los primeros en ganar todos los títulos europeos”

Malo Arthur Gusto (Décines-Charpieu, Francia; 19-5-2003) no le hace justicia su nombre. Es uno de los laterales con más proyección de Europa. Por algo pagó el Chelsea 30 kilos al Lyon. El francés se cita con MARCA en la previa de jugarse con el Betis el primer título de su carrera. 

Pregunta. Para quien aún no le conozca, ¿cómo se definiría?

Respuesta. Soy un chico sencillo, muy exigente conmigo mismo en el campo. Trabajo duro para ayudar al equipo en todo lo que puedo y dar lo mejor de mí. Me gusta atacar… pero también defender.  

P. ¿Cuál diría que es su mayor virtud?

R. La ambición de ganar. Me gusta romper líneas, ya sea con pases o conducciones, y servir centros al área para dar más opciones a mis compañeros.

P. Ahora brilla como lateral, pero se formó como extremo.

R. Un compañero se lesionó cuando jugaba en el sub 17 del Olympique Lyon y tuve que hace de lateral porque no teníamos otro. Rápidamente me di cuenta de que podía lograr algo importante jugando de ‘2’, que podía llegar antes al primer equipo. 

P. ¿Quiénes eran sus ídolos de niño y en quién se fija ahora?

R. De niño me gustaban mucho los brasileños: Ronaldinho, Neymar… Ahora, en mi posición, Hakimi es el mejor. Dani Alves también lo fue.   

P. Pero, antes que todo eso, jugaba al rugby.

R. Sí. No empecé a jugar al fútbol hasta los 10 años. Del rugby aprendí el deseo de ganar, de competir, de dar siempre lo mejor.

P. Perdone la impertinencia. Malo Gusto en español tiene un significado ‘peculiar’. ¿No sé si es consciente y si Cucurella y Robert Sánchez le gastan muchas bromas al respecto?

R. Sí, algunos me hacen bromas [ríe] a veces y es divertido.

P. Llegó al Chelsea en 2023 a cambio de 30 millones de euros. Ha disputado 77 partidos y ha repartido 11 asistencias. Nada mal para un lateral. ¿Qué balance hace?

R. Esta temporada es completamente diferente de la anterior. Cambiamos de entrenador y tenemos un nuevo sistema de juego, pero estamos en una buena línea: nos hemos clasificado para la Champions y vamos a jugar la final de la Conference contra el Betis. Sería importante para nosotros ganarla para seguir creciendo como equipo.

P. Estamos acostumbrados a ver al Chelsea jugando Champions. ¿Cómo de importante sería ganar la Conference? 

R. Muy importante. Se trata de ganar un título continental. En nuestro caso cobra especial importancia porque queremos ser el primer equipo de la historia en ganar todas las competiciones europeas: Champions, Recopa, Europa League, Copa de la UEFA y Conference. En mi caso sería mi primer título como profesional, así que estoy expectante por jugar la final y ganarla.

P. El Chelsea era el favorito desde antes de arrancar la Conference. ¿Les pesa esa etiqueta?

R. Para ser sincero, no hacemos mucho caso a estas cosas. Estamos centrados en llegar a la final y lo hemos logrado. Ahora lo más importante es prepararnos para ganar porque será un partido difícil.

P. ¿Qué cree que tiene que hacer el Chelsea para ganar al Betis?

R. No voy a hablar de tácticas. Creo que lo más importante será el deseo de vencer. El Chelsea se merece ganar trofeos y jugar la Champions League. Debemos analizar al Betis, pero, sobre todo, ejecutar nuestros nuestro plan de juego.

P. A Gudmundsson, de la Fiorentina, le preocupaba Isco. ¿A qué jugador del Betis cree que hay que vigilar más de cerca?

R. Si el Betis está en la final es porque es un buen equipo, han jugado muy bien. Antony, pero, sobre todo Isco, creo que un jugador ‘top’. Tendremos que vigilarles, pero, insisto, lo más importante, será seguir nuestro plan: la forma en la que vamos a presionar, a atacar, a defender…

P. En España conocemos al Enzo Maresca jugador. ¿Cómo es el entrenador?

R. Es un buen entrenador. Tiene muchas ideas. Sabe la forma en la que va a atacar, cómo va a defender… Cuida muchos los detalles e intenta darnos muchas herramientas y variantes para estar mejor sobre el campo. También nos motiva y nos transmite su deseo de ganar. Si hemos llegado hasta aquí es por él.

P. Usted juega de ‘2’. El ‘3’ es para uno de los ‘nuestros’: Cucurella. ¿Qué destacaría de Marc?

R. Lo primero que es un chico muy divertido. ‘Cucu’ se ha tenido que adaptarse a un nuevo rol. Los laterales, la mayor parte del tiempo, tenemos que ir hacia adentro para hacer las veces de centrocampista y tratamos de ayudarnos. Es importante fomentar esa conexión sobre el campo y tener jugadores como Cucurella en el equipo.

P. Talento no les falta. Enzo, Palmer, Sancho, Nico Jackson, Caicedo… ¿Cuál de sus compañeros le sorprendió más?

R. Tenemos un montón de jugadores ‘top’. Cualquiera te puede sorprender. Es cierto que Cole Palmer ha demostrado que puede ser uno de los mejores del mundo, pero es bueno jugar con todos ellos. Estamos construyendo algo entre todos para ser mejores en cada partido, ganar trofeos, jugar la Champions…

P. La Conference podría ser su primer trofeo. ¿Ha hecho alguna apuesta/promesa?

R. No, no voy a decir nada porque no quiero tener mala suerte. Sólo puedo decir que estamos preparados para dar nuestra mejor versión.
