McLaren Formula 1 Team driver Oscar Piastri of Team Australia drives in Practice Session 1 at the Formula 1 Pirelli United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas Friday October 18, 2024. The Formula One 2025 Spanish Grand Prix finished the way it started on Sunday, with the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finishing 1-2 to further build their commanding lead in the team standings.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third to grab the remaining podium spot at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The quest for third was where all the real drama happened in the race.
Piastri, from Australia, was in command from the start, sacrificing the early lead after the initial pit stops when four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen grabbed first.
Piastri retook the lead as Red Bull’s Verstappen, from the Netherlands, took an early second stop. The question at that point was whether Verstappen would take a third pitstop, which could give him a tire edge late in the race.
Verstappen did pit for a third time, but any strategic advantage he could have had was lost when Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli was forced off the track due to a problem with his car, with a safety car being deployed.
That sent the leaders back to the pit stop again, with Piastri and Norris, from Great Britain, still 1-2 with six laps to go. But Verstappen was passed by Leclerc on the restart, and Verstappen then tangled with Mercedes’ George Russell as they collided twice.
Verstappen was penalized 10 seconds, plummeting him to 10th place, with Monaco’s Leclerc finishing third and Russell fourth.
Kick Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg of Germany drove a masterful race, finishing fifth after starting 15th.
This was the fifth win of the season for Piastri, who leads the driver standings with 186 points, followed by Norris (176) and Verstappen (137).
On the team side, McLaren has a huge advantage over Ferrari, 362 to 165 points.

Why a Jayson Tatum–Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Actually Makes Sense
It’s the classic case of two wrongs making a right.Jayson Tatum for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Straight up. I know what you’re thinking. Well, actually I don’t. Because if you’re a Celtics fan, you’d never do this. And if you’re a Bucks fan, you’d never do this. In that sense, I guess I do know what you’re thinking. And in both cases, you’re wrong. You need to reconsider. In almost every case, the greatest players in NBA history were winners. Celtics fans consider Tatum a great player. Same with the Bucks and their beloved Giannis. And in many ways, they’re right. But with two titles in a combined 21 NBA seasons, neither qualifies as a winner. That’s not to say they can’t be. There’s still time. But a change of scenery -- and a situation more tailored to their skills -- would […]

Really going out on a limb there, picking the four undefeated teams that occupy Nos. 1-4 in the AP poll! Do you like UConn on the women’s side too? But sarcasm aside, there’s a reason why that quartet has risen to its own tier at the top. Every one of those four teams can make a case for the best team in the country, and all […]

The Spurs will get big man Victor Wembanyama back after a 12-game absence and see if they can make a run at notching the upset during the West final. The New York Knicks and Orlando Magic are playing in the East final and New York is soaring with eight wins in its past nine games. The Magic have to make up for the loss of star guard Franz Wagner (ankle), who will miss his […]
