Sein Fehlschuss machte Portugal zum Gewinner der Nations League. Anschließend sprach Spanien-Star Alvaro Morata (32) über einen Rücktritt aus der Nationalmannschaft.
„Es ist möglich“, erklärte Morata laut der Zeitung „As“ über ein mögliches Ende seiner Zeit in der Furia Roja.
Bei den anstehenden WM-Qualifikationsspielen im September in Bulgarien und in der Türkei werde er nicht für Spanien spielen, erklärte Morata weiter.
Im Elfmeterschießen des Endspiels von München wurde Morata zur tragischen Figur in der spanischen Mannschaft. Erst in der 111. Minute eingewechselt, trat er als vierter spanischer Schütze an – und vergab seinen Elfer. Danach machte Ruben Neves mit seinem verwandelten Elfmeter den Triumph für Portugal perfekt.

Morata nach dem dramatischen Spiel: „Mir tut es leid für meine Mitspieler, aber das ist nun mal Teil des Lebens“. Seinen Elfmeter habe er „nicht gut geschossen“, gab der Stürmer zu. „Ich hätte es besser machen können, aber jetzt kann ich nichts mehr daran ändern“, so der Nationalspieler, der aktuell von der AC Milan an Galatasaray Istanbul verliehen ist.

De la Fuente in der „Marca“ dazu: „Morata ist ein Anführer und besonders wichtig für uns, unabhängig davon, ob er mehr oder weniger spielt. Er ist der beste Anführer.“
Der Coach weiter: „Er hat noch viel Fußball in sich und wird einige sehr wichtige Momente mit uns erleben. Er leistet einen großen Beitrag hinter den Kulissen, abseits des Rampenlichts. Darauf lege ich großen Wert.“
Nun könnte es sein, dass der Trainer in Zukunft auf seinen Anführer verzichten müsste …
