Wenn ER über Torwart Yann Sommer (36) spricht, dann weiß er, wovon er redet: Jörg Stiel (57) stand von 2001 bis 2004 bei Bundesligist Mönchengladbach im Kasten – zehn Jahre vor Sommer (2014 bis 2023). Er bestritt 21 Länderspiele für die Schweiz. Im Gespräch mit SPORT BILD spricht der Ex-Keeper über seinen Landsmann, dessen Torwart-Spiel und seine Zeit beim FC Bayern (Januar bis August 2023).
SPORT BILD: Inters Yann Sommer startet nach einer starken Saison mit einem enttäuschenden Finale den nächsten Titel-Angriff bei der Klub-WM. Warum ist Ihr Schweizer Landsmann mit 36 in der Form seines Lebens?
Jörg Stiel (57): Er kann so performen, weil er sich offensichtlich pudelwohl fühlt in dieser Mannschaft. Für mich ist seine Leistung kein Wunder. Diese emotionalen Faktoren befähigen ihn zu solch einer Leistung.
Was meinen Sie genau?
Es ist auffällig, wie viele Bälle Yann zugespielt bekommt, um das Spiel fortzusetzen. Zudem hat er eine hervorragende Art, das Spiel auszulösen, Angriffe aufzubauen und wird eben immer wieder ins Offensiv-Geschehen eingebunden. Dieses Vertrauen der Kollegen ständig zu spüren, macht ihn noch größer.

Wegen seiner Körpergröße (1,83 Meter) wurde Sommer in seiner Karriere schon öfter kritisch beäugt. Auch in seinem halben Jahr beim FC Bayern in der Rückrunde 2023 kam dieses Thema bei Fehlern und schwachen Leistungen hoch.
Damals, als es bei Bayern nicht gut lief, haben einige von ihren Fehlern abgelenkt. Man hat viel zu viel auf ihn abgewälzt. Und dieses Thema, dass er zu klein ist, ist es sehr banal und sehr oberflächlich. Bayern ist einer der größten Vereine der Welt und hat ihn ja schließlich im Wissen um seine Körpergröße verpflichtet. Da kann sich keiner hinstellen und ihn deswegen kritisieren. Ich habe damals Rückendeckung von Klubseite vermisst. Es ist nicht gut, wenn jemand öffentlich verprügelt wird und als Schuldiger dargestellt wird. In der Konstellation wie sie damals bei Bayern war, konnte Yann keine Top-Leistungen abrufen.
War es für Sommer eine Genugtuung ausgerechnet in der Allianz Arena das Finale zu bestreiten?
Wenn Sie Yann genau diese Frage stellen, würde er sagen, dass es für ihn gar keine Rolle spielt, wo das Finale steigt und er einfach froh ist, so etwas zu erleben – ohne Rachegelüste oder Genugtuung. Ich würde meine Hand dafür ins Feuer legen, dass er so antwortet. Yann ist einfach ein guter Mensch. Und hebt sich als Torwart von anderen auf Weltklasse-Niveau ab.

Seine Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit ist außerordentlich. Er kommt an unglaubliche Bälle heran wie im Halbfinal-Rückspiele gegen Barcelona (4:3, d. Red). Wenn du ihm die Kugel in den Fuß gibst, weißt du immer, dass er was Gescheites damit anstellt. Außerdem ist er eine Riesenpersönlichkeit. Für einen Torwart auf diesem Level ist es entscheidend, dass er über den Dingen stehen kann, Kritik und Rückschläge gut verarbeitet.
Dortmunds Gregor Kobel spielt ebenfalls seit Jahren auf Top-Niveau – und ist heiß begehrt von Top-Klubs wie Chelsea. Er will beim BVB bleiben. Die richtige Entscheidung?
Gregor passt mit Extra-Klasse auf der Linie und seiner körperlichen Präsenz auch sehr gut nach England. Die Premier League ist einfach eine extrem spannende Liga. Gregor möchte Champions League spielen, sich mit den Besten messen. Dass sich der BVB noch für die Königklasse qualifiziert hat, ist ein großes Argument für einen Verbleib in Dortmund. Er kann sich weiter auf höchstem Niveau auszeichnen, immer mehr zum Führungsspieler reifen und später immer noch den nächsten Karriereschritt machen. Für Dortmund ist es ein Segen, dass er bleibt.
Sommer, Kobel, Jonas Omlin – hat die Schweiz Deutschland als Torhüternation eingeholt?
Wir haben euch überholt (lacht)! Tatsache ist, dass wir in der Schweiz eine sehr stringente, gute Torhüter-Ausbildung haben. Das Land ist klein, der Verband ebenfalls, wir haben einen engen Austausch. Die Wege sind kurz, das erleichtert die Zusammenarbeit, du kannst Dinge schneller verändern als in einem Riesenverband wie dem DFB. Was die Torhüter angeht, sind wir auf Augenhöhe mit den Top-Nationen.
