One of college football’s most intriguing quarterback situations just added another wrinkle.
Jake Garcia, a blue-chip quarterback prospect in the Class of 2021 with stops at Miami, Missouri and East Carolina, signed with Michigan, where he’ll join No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood, Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene and blue-chip 2024 recruit Jadyn Davis on the depth chart.

Garcia is a late and somewhat surprising addition to Michigan’s roster, though coach Sherrone Moore didn’t rule out adding another quarterback after Keene missed spring practice with an injury. Moore said Keene resumed throwing in April and the expectation is that he’ll be ready for preseason camp. After going through the spring with only two healthy quarterbacks, Michigan was assessing options to shore up its depth, including the possibility of adding someone through the portal.

Garcia, a California native who finished his high school career in Georgia, was a top-50 prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the Class of 2021 and signed with Miami after originally committing to USC. He appeared in eight games for the Hurricanes as a redshirt freshman and finished the season with 803 passing yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions.
Garcia transferred to Missouri after two seasons at Miami but didn’t see any game action in 2023. His next stop was East Carolina, where he won the starting quarterback job but was replaced by Michigan State transfer Katin Houser after throwing 12 interceptions in six games. Garcia has thrown for 2,376 yards, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in his college career.
Michigan now has six quarterbacks on its roster for 2025. Along with Underwood and Keene, the Wolverines have the redshirt freshman Davis, senior Davis Warren and freshman Chase Herbstreit, the son of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. Davis and Underwood were the only quarterbacks who participated in spring practice, as Warren is recovering from an ACL injury and Herbstreit was a June enrollee.
Michigan hasn’t named a starting quarterback, though Underwood made a strong case for the job in the spring. It remains to be seen if Keene, who amassed 8,245 passing yards at Fresno State and UCF, will be healthy enough to mount a serious challenge to Underwood in preseason camp. Either way, adding Garcia gives Michigan another veteran quarterback who could play in a pinch for an offense trying to bounce back after ranking 131st in the FBS in passing last year.
