Former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, fresh from announcing his retirement, now faces a new legal challenge.
On June 22, 2025, Jones was hit with a misdemeanor charge for allegedly fleeing the scene of a car crash earlier this year involving an intoxicated woman. This development raises fresh concerns amid an already controversial legacy.

Jones, 37, officially retired hours after police filed the new charge accusing him of leaving the site of a February 24 accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The complaint, drawn from police and court records, led to his arraignment being scheduled for July 24.
What took place during the incident
According to an Albuquerque Journal report, first cited by the New York Post, officers responded to a single-vehicle collision where they found a highly inebriated woman in the passenger seat, “partially unclothed”, who stated that Jones was the driver and fled the scene.
The woman told police she had ingested alcohol and mushrooms at Jones‘s home before the crash occurred.
Despite his absence from the physical crash site, Jones allegedly contacted the woman by phone, though he refused to confirm his identity directly with officers, and reportedly uttered “concerning comments” during the conversation.
He later confirmed the woman’s presence at his residence but not his presence at the accident location.
A career marked by legal turbulence
Jones‘s new charge adds to a troubling history of legal issues. His record includes a 2015 hit-and-run in New Mexico involving a pregnant woman, domestic battery in Las Vegas, DUI arrests, and drug-testing controversies.
Yet despite these incidents, Jones remained one of MMA’s most dominant figures, capturing both light heavyweight and heavyweight titles and retiring with an impressive 28-1 (1 NC) record.
More recently, in March 2024, he faced charges for threatening an anti-doping officer and tampering with communications. This case was resolved through an agreement requiring four hours of anger-management classes and a 90-day clean record.
Legal fallout and legacy implications
Due to the timing of the charge, filed shortly before Jones‘s retirement announcement, many speculate it may impact his post-fighting career. Jones expressed gratitude for his time in the UFC but offered no public reaction to this latest charge.
Criminal defense experts say leaving the scene of an accident, even a misdemeanor, can carry serious consequences. Aside from possible fines, it could influence Jones‘s freedom to move forward or pursue new opportunities, including television and commentary roles.
