Das ist so bitter! Ausgerechnet im Viertelfinale zeigen die deutschen Junioren bei der U21-WM in Polen ihre schwächste Leistung und scheiden gegen die spielstarken Schweden mit 26:32 aus (14:16).
Die Schweden treffen im Halbfinale nun auf Dänemark. Die deutsche Mannschaft muss im Platzierungsspiel schon Freitag gegen Norwegen ran, die 23:25 zuvor Dänemark unterliegen.

Die Deutschen kommen gut ins Spiel, führen schnell mit 4:1 (5.). Alles läuft gut, doch nach dem 6:5 (11.) verliert die Mannschaft irgendwie den Faden. Mit zu vielen Fehlwürfen und vor allem technischen Fehlern schlägt sich in dieser Phase die Heuberger-Truppe selbst. Die Schweden können auf drei Tore Vorsprung davonziehen (6:9/15.).
Schweden entzaubern deutsches U21-Team
Davon erholen sich die Deutschen nicht mehr. Immer wieder öffnet der Gegner die Tür, leistet sich auch Fehler. Doch in der ersten Halbzeit können das die Deutschen nicht ausnutzen. Coach Heuberger mahnt in der Auszeit: „Wir brauchen mehr Spiel-Ruhe und einen besseren Rückzug.“
In die Halbzeit geht es mit 14:16. Die DHB-Auswahl muss sich steigern, kommt mit der harten Gangart der Schweden nicht klar, verlieren im Angriff zu oft den Ball.
Die Schiris aus Uruguay verteilen 2-Minuten-Strafen (insgesamt 14) und Siebermeter (10 für Deutschland, fünf für Schweden) wie Bonbons. Gleich zwei Schweden, Marcus Björkman und Theodor Uliana Starck, sitzen in der 2. Hälfte mit Rot (nach 3x 2 Minuten) auf der Tribüne. Das Spiel ist nicht schön, eher eine Abwehrschlacht.

In der letzten Auszeit machen sich die deutschen Jungs noch einmal heiß: „Wir kämpfen bis zum Tod.“ Einsatz und Wille stimmen, reicht aber an diesem Abend nicht.
