Ungeschlagen marschierten die deutschen Junioren durchs U21-WM-Turnier in Polen. Nach fünf tollen Spielen ohne Niederlage kam Schweden. 26:32 unterliegt die DHB-Auswahl im Viertelfinale und ist raus aus den Medaillen-Spielen.
Die Koffer packen muss der deutsche Nachwuchs trotzdem weiterhin nicht, die WM-Plätze werden ausgespielt. Bundestrainer Martin Heuberger (61) muss mit seinem Team schon 21 Stunden nach der Viertelfinalpleite am Freitag (18.30 Uhr) in der Platzierungsrunde (5 bis 8) gegen Norwegen ran.

Neues Ziel ist nun das Spiel um Platz 5. Mit dem Erreichen dieser Partie will Heuberger seine unglücklichen Verlierer trösten.
Der Bundestrainer: „Wir hatten in der Summe zu viele Fehler im Angriff, darum haben die Schweden verdient gewonnen. Ich hoffe, dass wir die Köpfe schnell wieder hochbekommen und zu unserer alten Stärke zurückfinden. Wir wollen das Spiel gegen Norwegen gewinnen, damit wir, wenn möglich, noch ins Spiel um Platz 5 gehen können.“

Heuberger lobt seine Mannschaft für ihren tollen WM-Auftritt: „Wenn man bedenkt, dass wir die Hauptrunde als Gruppenerster abgeschlossen haben, Spanien und Ägypten hinter uns gelassen haben – das spricht für die Mannschaft und für die tolle Moral. Deshalb war es für uns besonders bitter, dass wir das Ding gegen Schweden verloren haben.“
Heuberger: „Die Jungs sind sehr niedergeschlagen“
Und Heuberger, der mit seinen früheren Teams schon drei U21-WM-Titel gewonnen hat (2009, 2011 und 2023), ergänzt: „Natürlich sind die Jungs jetzt alle sehr niedergeschlagen. Sie hatten den großen Traum nach dem bisher sehr guten Turnier.“

Das Spiel um Platz 3 steigt am Sonntag um 17 Uhr, das Finale direkt danach um 19.30 Uhr in Kattowitz.
