In a night filled with love, legacy, and Lakers-level praise, Los Angeles turned out in full force to celebrate one of its most iconic athletes – Candace Parker.
The emotional tribute unfolded at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday as Parker’s No. 3 jersey was raised to the rafters, officially enshrining her among Sparks royalty. She becomes just the third player in franchise history to receive the honor, joining fellow legends Lisa Leslie and Penny Toler.
But it wasn’t just a Sparks moment – it was a Los Angeles moment. Magic Johnson, an icon across the sports world and partial Sparks owner, delivered heartfelt praise both on-screen and online, placing Parker in the same breath as Kobe Bryant and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
“This honor means you have arrived,” Magic said in a video tribute played during the ceremony. “It means you’re a superstar.”
Magic and Leslie were full of praise for Parker
Magic later added on social media: “Candace Parker has left an indelible mark… not only as one of the greatest players to ever grace the court, but as a true ambassador of our franchise and women’s basketball. Her legacy is immeasurable.”
Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie, who handed the franchise torch to Parker years ago, gave a stirring speech courtside.
“She changed the game,” Leslie said. “When I handed the keys over to Candace Parker, I knew the Sparks were in good hands… Nobody else can do what she’s done for the LA Sparks.”
And it’s true – Parker’s WNBA résumé is as complete as they come: Rookie of the Year, MVP, All-Defensive Team honors, three championships, and now, immortality in the rafters.

Yet through the spotlight and standing ovations, Parker herself brought the focus back to what mattered most: the journey.
It’s not about a jersey retirement or honors, the Sparks icon said, holding back tears. “It’s about enjoying the process, enjoying the journey… LA isn’t just about ball, it’s now where we call home.”
On a night when basketball royalty came together to honor one of their own, Candace Parker didn’t just have her number retired – she had her story immortalized.

The Baltimore Orioles have agreed to terms with the top power hitter remaining on the free agent market. The O's and first baseman Pete Alonso have agreed to a five-year contract worth $155 million, CBS Sports has confirmed. The deal does not include any opt outs, per the New York Post. The team has not yet announced the signing. The signing comes one day after it was reported the Orioles offered Kyle Schwarber the same five-year, $150 million contract he took to return to the Philadelphia Phillies. Essentially, the O's added $1 million per year to that contract, pivoted to Alonso, and got it done. The $31 million is the second-highest average annual value ever given to a first baseman.
