Sunderland have agreed a fee with Brighton for their 18-year-old winger Tommy Watson.

The fee is not being made public but sources with knowledge of the deal have told The Athletic it is in the region of £10million ($12m).

Watson, who turns 19 next week, has signed a contract with Brighton until June 2029. He had one year left on his deal at Sunderland.

Brighton appeared to have clinched Watson’s signature in January, but a deal fell through. Watson was injured then, but he has returned to action and is available for Sunderland selection until he officially moves to Brighton on July 1st.

“Tommy is an exciting young talent who we have been tracking for a significant period of time,” Brighton’s technical director David Weir said in a news release.

“He’s had an excellent breakthrough season with Sunderland, and we are looking forward to him joining us in the summer. However, for now his full focus is on helping them finish their season as strongly as possible.”

Watson made a two-minute debut for Sunderland in April 2023 and was given another few minutes in the final Championship game of last season. But his performances for the club’s youth and under-age teams had already caught the eye of Brighton and others.

This season, he has made 15 appearances and scored twice against Stoke City in December three days before being injured against Bristol City. That kept him out until last month but Brighton have not been deterred.

Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Tommy’s a very talented young player, who’s been subject to multiple offers from Premier League clubs over the past two windows, and it’s been well-documented that we’ve declined these approaches with the intent of extending his contract.

“Unfortunately, this has not been possible, and we now believe this agreement represents the best long-term outcome for Sunderland AFC.

“Tommy first joined our club at age six and his rise to the first team demonstrates what is possible at the Academy of Light. We are proud of the role we have played in his development and although we will be disappointed to see him depart in June, we know he’s fully committed to helping the team throughout the final stages of the season.”

Watson has represented England at youth level for the under-17s and under-18s, making his debut for the latter in October 2023.

The move helps confirm Sunderland’s reputation as a trading club. Watson effectively replaced Jack Clarke, who was bought from Tottenham for under £1m and sold to Ipswich last August for £16m.

Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images We’ve made it to the final three weeks of the NFL season. At this point, we have a pretty decent idea of how teams are. Teams like the Broncos and Patriots have to be excited with how their seasons have gone, while the Chiefs and Lions must be disappointed in their likely playoff misses. Those teams aren’t close to being the biggest disappointments in 2025. The Lions are still an excellent playoff team, who could sneak into the playoffs, and the Chiefs have been a dynasty for nearly the last decade, so they can’t be too crushed by one bad season.
