Po utkání závěrečného kola základní části Snapbacks ligy mezi Bratislava Monarchs a vítězem dlouhodobé fáze Nitra Knights (13:14) totiž podali hráči z hlavního města Slovenska protest proti neoprávněnému startu jednoho z hráčů Rytířů z Nitry a disciplinární komise jim vyhověla, čímž se Bratislavané dostali na čtvrté místo před Ostravu.
Nitra se ovšem proti rozhodnutí disciplinární komise odvolala k radě soutěže, která jí vyhověla a kontumaci zrušila. „Hráčům jsme kladli na srdce, ať se na play off připravují, jako by se nic nedělo. Zvládli to skvěle. Měli jsme ještě pár připravených scénářů, kdyby rada rozhodla jinak. Vše ale nakonec dopadlo dobře,“ vrátil se k nepříjemnému konci základní části special kouč Steelers Jan Klimeš.
Ostravané stejně jako v minulé sezoně v semifinále play off natrefili na soupeře z Nitry a na rozdíl od loňské porážky (19:21) dokázali tentokrát úřadující šampiony Snapbacks ligy vyřadit (24:21). Hvězdou závěrečných minut napínavého duelu byl teprve 19letý quarterback Steelers Amos Feranec, jenž v předposlední minutě položil rozhodující touchdown.

„Loni jsem v podobné situaci neuspěl, ale byla to pro mě obrovská zkušenost. Věděl jsem, že taková situace může přijít znovu a že tentokrát na to musím být připravený. Šel jsem do toho s čistější hlavou a větším klidem. Také tým je zkušenější. Věřili jsme si navzájem a v klíčový moment to všechno zapadlo tak, jak mělo,“ líčil pro klubový web Feranec.
Ostravané hráli finále ligy amerického fotbalu šestkrát, ale jen jednou v něm uspěli. Před 28 lety porazili Prague Panthers (35:21). V letošním Czech Bowlu se postaví favorizované Vysočině Gladiators znovu po dvou letech. „Hodněkrát jsme se dostali do finále a vždy to skončilo druhým místem. Máme velkou motivaci přivézt pohár domů,“ řekl Feranec na tiskové konferenci v Praze.
„Těším se na sobotu strašně moc! Je to sen, který se mi pomalu začíná plnit. Uděláme všechno pro to, abychom vyhráli,“ svěřoval se Feranec.
Vysočina hrála finále ve své patnáctileté historii třikrát, dvakrát uspěla. Naposledy před dvěma lety porazila právě Ostravu (42:28). Favoritem je i letos. V základní části Gladiators vyhráli devět z deseti zápasů a skončili druzí za Nitrou.
