El objetivo de Jon Rahm: “La Jarra de Clarete es lo más especial”

Jon Rahm viene de firmar una gran ronda en Valderrama, donde hizo 65 golpes sin bogeys y mostró un nivel espectacular. Además, el ‘León de Barrika’ se acerca en la clasificación de este circuito al número 1 del mismo, el chileno Joaquín Niemann. Con estas buenas sensaciones se presenta el jugador español esta semana en Royal Portrush (Irlanda), la sede del 153º British Open que comienza el jueves.

Su juego

Como siempre, ‘Rahmbo’ rebosa confianza, aunque sin duda podemos decir que en esta ocasión está más que justificado, no sólo por su juego en Valderrama, sino también por su buen rendimiento en los dos últimos Majors. “Es extraño, pero siempre me siento cerca [de su mejor juego]. Siempre confío en que estoy ahí. La semana pasada, sobre todo el domingo, fue muy buena. Fue una ronda de golf muy buena. Fue, con diferencia, mi mejor ronda en Valderrama, y jugarla sin bogeys, sin correr ningún riesgo salvo en el último hoyo, sin cometer un error grave, hace que que me sienta bien, con confianza. Espero poder volver a intentarlo esta semana”, comentó en rueda de prensa el vasco.

La sequía del golf español en el British

Son ya 37 años sin que España gane un British, desde que Seve alzara la Jarra de Clarete por segunda vez en Royal Lytham & St Annes. Dicha circunstancia se la recordaron a Jon, que habló ampliamente del asunto. “Olazábal y Sergio han tenido sus oportunidades. Nunca es fácil ganar un Major, y nunca es fácil ganar un Open. Creo que una de las razones por las que Seve era tan querido en Gran Bretaña e Irlanda es porque no creo que nadie concibiera que esa era la forma de jugar al golf links: simplemente pegar el driver por todas partes y encontrar la manera de meterlo en el green, chipear y patear. No era normal, lo cual demuestra lo bueno que era como golfista”, analiza el vizcaíno.

Eso sí, descarta imitar al ‘Genio de Pedreña’ en su manera de afrontar un campo tipo links: “No creo que nadie pueda jugar al golf como Seve. Creo que Seve es el único que podía jugar al golf como Seve. Su habilidad para hacer lo que hacía con una bola de golf es inigualable y se debe a cómo aprendió. Yo lo hice con un juego completo de palos y no sólo con un hierro 3, así que él aprendió a jugar de una manera diferente”, explica.

¿Qué significa el Abierto Británico?

Quizá todos los años se repita la misma pregunta a Jon, pero cada vez que la responde transmite entusiasmo. ¿Qué significa para ti el Open Championship? “En mi opinión, el Open es el evento más prestigioso que se puede ganar en golf. Según mis conocimientos y la historia del golf, creo que la Jarra de Clarete es lo más especial. Además, hay un orden en todo esto porque va cambiando de sede, y si puedes ganar en St. Andrews, no creo que nada en el golf se le acerque. Obviamente, también hay otros torneos de gran importancia. Para mí, el British es eso. Es la cuna del golf, el golf nació en esta parte del mundo. Es el campeonato más antiguo que tenemos y eso es lo que lo hace tan especial: el tipo de golf que jugamos, los campos tipo links donde, en teoría, se supone que se juega, las condiciones climáticas que son únicas… No creo que haya una palabra para describirlo, pero en conjunto es lo que lo hace tan especial”.

Su hoyo favorito

Quizá para muy ‘cafeteros’, pero por si algunos aficionados tienen curiosidad mientras vean el torneo en sus casas, este el hoyo favorito de Rahm en Royal Portrush. “Si tuviera que elegir un hoyo concreto, probablemente sería el 4 o el 5. Creo que el 5 es un hoyo bastante inusual en el golf tipo links. Tiene un gran cambio de elevación, un par 4 manejable. No estoy acostumbrado a estar en el tee de salida de ningún campo tipo links y tener una vista de todo el campo así, mirando al océano. Creo que es un buen hoyo. Y el 4, simplemente por su dificultad y complejidad, siempre lo he disfrutado. Aunque probablemente sería el 5 sobre el 4”.
