USMNT legend supports the choice of Christian Pulisic and other players for not attending the Gold Cup

Christian Pulisic finds himself at the center of controversy and, perhaps, among the most criticized figures in the current U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). The star forward declined to participate in this summer’s Gold Cup, choosing instead to focus on preparing for the upcoming club season.

His decision has sparked widespread debate, particularly because he chose to prioritize major tournaments like next year’s FIFA World Cup. This move has drawn both support and criticism from fans and analysts alike. However, one USMNT legend has publicly backed the AC Milan star, voicing his support amidst the controversy.

The USMNT legend who stood by Christian Pulisic

Marcelo Balboa, a former U.S. Men’s National Team captain, earned 127 caps during his international career and remains one of the most respected figures in American soccer. He famously led the Stars and Stripes to victory in the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup, cementing his legacy as a foundational leader of the national team.

Marcelo Balboa shared his perspective during a recent episode of the Call It What You Want podcast, where he engaged in a lively debate with fellow former U.S. international Charlie Davies. Despite differing opinions, Balboa stood firmly in support of Christian Pulisic and other U.S. players who chose to skip the Gold Cup.

The first thing Balboa emphasized was his unwavering support for the U.S. players. He acknowledged the importance of critical analysis but warned against crossing the line into personal attacks. “But I think there’s a fine line between being negative and being an idiot, and being critical of certain people. Win or lose, I’ve got their back and I always will,” Balboa stated, reinforcing his loyalty to the team.

Balboa also pointed a finger at the media, suggesting it plays a significant role in fueling negative narratives around U.S. national team stars. “I think we cross the line sometimes. We all want to see soccer grow. We want this team to do well. Tell me-what good does it do, beating up Christian Pulisic every day, or Tyler Adams, or Weston McKennie? It makes no sense. It makes no sense to me,” he said.

Looking ahead: Balboa weighs in on USMNT’s 2026 World Cup

Marcelo Balboa understands the weight of performing on home soil, having represented the United States in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. That year, the USMNT advanced past the group stage before being eliminated by Brazil in the Round of 16.

With that perspective in mind, Balboa shared a powerful message to the current USMNT squad. “You’ve got everything to fight for. Not a lot of players will ever play in a World Cup. Not a lot of players will ever represent their country in a World Cup at home. This is an opportunity to enhance our sport,” he emphasized, underlining the rare and historic nature of the 2026 tournament.

Chelsea’s Champions League attacking woes explained: Why Enzo Maresca’s side have so few attacking chances

On the surface level, Chelsea's 2-1 defeat in Bergamo on Tuesday had the look of one inflicted on them by Enzo Maresca making the wrong adjustments at the back end of the pitch. A midfield of right backs and a back four that had been forced into too many changes buckled, Charles De Ketelaere went charging up the gut and what once seemed to be a vital win in an archetypal tough place to go on the continent became a fifth straight road defeat in the Champions League for Chelsea. It need not have been that way. When Reece James powered to the byline to cross for Joao Pedro, Chelsea were entitled to feel that their foothold in the game was well earned. They had quelled the early threat of Atalanta passes in behind their full back and had built […]
