This Thursday night, August 8, the Las Vegas Raiders will visit the former team of their new head coach, Pete Carroll. And Carroll has made it clear that his long chapter in the Emerald City is over. His focus now lies entirely on leading the Raiders to victory.

There may be some intrigue surrounding this matchup, but it won’t come from veteran stars or high-stakes drama. Instead, it’s a chance to watch rookies take the field and display hunger and ambition-elements Carroll says are all he’s paying attention to heading into the preseason opener against the Seahawks. He showed no emotion about his return to Seattle or the history that comes with it.

Pete Carroll’s legacy with the Seahawks
After nearly a decade at the helm of USC’s football program, Pete Carroll made the leap to the NFL, becoming head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in 2010-a role he held until 2023. Thirteen seasons in one city is no small feat, and while Carroll insists he’s moved on, it’s hard to imagine his return to Seattle won’t stir up at least some mixed feelings.
During his tenure with the Seahawks, Carroll wasn’t just the head coach-he also served as executive vice president of football operations. That dual role gave him deep influence over the organization, and his fingerprints are all over its modern history.
In his final two seasons, Carroll posted back-to-back 9-8 records. After the 2023 campaign, he stepped away from the head coaching role. At the time, he was the second-oldest coach in the league, just five months behind Bill Belichick. But with Belichick now coaching at the University of North Carolina and out of the NFL picture, Carroll reclaims the distinction of being the oldest active head coach in the league.
Not just Carroll, Geno Smith returns too
Pete Carroll isn’t the only one making a return to Seattle this week. Quarterback Geno Smith, who was traded to the Raiders this past offseason, will also be back at Lumen Field. While it’s unlikely he’ll see playing time in this preseason matchup, he’ll be on the sidelines watching his former and current teams go head-to-head.
A preseason clash that’s drawing extra attention
Preseason games typically don’t draw much excitement. But this one is different. There’s real anticipation around several debuting players and the fresh starts both franchises are chasing.
For the Raiders, rookies Ashton Jeanty, Jack Bech, Dont’e Thornton Jr., and Darien Porter are expected to make their first appearances, each carrying high expectations for the 2025 season. On the Seahawks’ side, Jalen Milroe, Elijah Arroyo, Tory Horton, Grey Zabel, and Nick Emmanwori are names fans are eager to see in action.
Neither team made the playoffs last year, and both are entering new phases with renewed optimism. This game may not count in the standings, but it marks the beginning of what each franchise hopes will be a new era of success.
