Bright spots in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first preseason defeat

The new season is underway, and teams are working to achieve the goals set at the start of the preseason. However, the opening week has already brought its share of disappointments, with the Jacksonville Jaguars among the teams falling short of expectations. Their home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers only deepened concerns.

Nevertheless, the team displayed flashes of potential, hinting at areas that can be improved to shift fan sentiment about their performance. With the season opener against the Carolina Panthers approaching quickly, the Jaguars have limited time to address key issues and make the necessary progress before kickoff.

Travis Hunter gives iconic NFL coach a blunt response about Jacksonville’s heat

What we learned of the Jaguars from Preseason Week 1

Despite their 25-31 loss to the Steelers, the Jaguars offered several insights into what to expect this season, including concerns surrounding the coaching staff and individual player performances.

First and foremost, Liam Coen’s debut as an NFL head coach was one of the main talking points. His play-calling marked a departure from the style seen over the past three seasons, incorporating more screen passes to test different options. Another notable change was the dynamic he created within the squad to adapt the game plan for his quarterback. Coen offered that the offense of the jaguars will work in the season.

The job of Travis Ettienne, the starting running back, was the sole ball carrier on the Jaguars’ opening drive. Tank Bigsby didn’t see his first carry until backup quarterback Nick Mullens was in the game. Given how important the screen game is in Liam Coen’s offense, Etienne’s pass-catching skills may make him the best fit for the system right now

Travis Hunter Among the Bright Spots for the Jaguars

Travis Hunter is one of the most anticipated additions to the Jacksonville Jaguars roster, selected second overall in the NFL Draft with high expectations for his impact. However, his NFL debut will be remembered in part for a costly missed tackle on Kaleb Johnson, a moment that will remain under scrutiny as he works to prove himself at the professional level.

Despite of that, Hunter showed strong instincts in zone coverage, reading routes effectively and likely setting up Dawuane Smoot’s first-half sack. While he is expected to specialize on offense, his defensive value should be significant from Week 1.

For now, the Jaguars will seek redemption in their second preseason matchup, taking on the New Orleans Saints. It will be a crucial opportunity to address their weaknesses and take a step toward securing a victory.
