Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Luka Doncic raised concerns after suffering a knee injury during an exhibition game with Slovenia. Many believed this would rule him out of this summer’s EuroBasket, but the European star surprised fans by confirming his participation in the tournament.
In response, renowned ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith chose not to join the wave of criticism and instead defended the player’s decision. According to Smith, Doncic’s choice makes perfect sense after the demanding 2024-25 season and the pressure he now faces in his new chapter with the Lakers following his departure from the Dallas Mavericks.

On First Take, Smith explained why he wasn’t surprised to see Doncic in action with his national team. “Normally I’d say yes, but in this case, I’m going to say no,” he said. He recalled that the Slovenian missed much of last season due to physical issues, yet still averaged 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists-even as many criticized his conditioning.
Smith also highlighted that Doncic recently signed a three-year contract and now appears to be in the best physical shape of his career. For the analyst, playing in EuroBasket is part of that preparation process. “He’s got his money, he’s in great shape, and if this is how he chooses to work on his body, I don’t blame him at all,” he stated.

Smith also emphasized the difference in mindset between American and international players when it comes to representing their countries. He pointed out that in Europe, fans expect their stars to compete in international tournaments, and players embrace that responsibility with pride.
“It’s important to remember that international players should be applauded for their level of commitment to their nation. For them, these competitions carry enormous value because their citizens hold them accountable,” he explained. That’s why he concluded there’s no reason to criticize Doncic for playing with Slovenia, even after a recent injury.

Concerns from the Lakers and Slovenian fans appear to be easing. According to journalist Marc Stein, Luka Doncic has been medically cleared and will be able to play in Slovenia’s next EuroBasket match against Great Britain. The news comes as a relief for the national team and NBA fans, who feared losing the Slovenian star during preseason preparations.
With this clearance, Doncic will continue to showcase his talent on the international stage, proving that his commitment to Slovenia remains strong and that, far from halting his career, the injury has only strengthened his desire to compete at the highest level.
