The University of Notre Dame has unveiled a redesigned logo for its football program, marking the first major update to the iconic Leprechaun emblem in 60 years.
The new design features the mythical Irish figure holding a football, reflecting the athletic department’s broader initiative to modernize branding across all varsity sports.

The original Leprechaun first appeared on the cover of TIME magazine on November 20, 1964, and has remained largely unchanged since.
According to Notre Dame officials, the updated logo will be featured on sidelines at home football games for the 2025 season and subsequent years.
The redesign was developed internally by Fighting Irish Media with input from the university’s athletic programs.
Designers referenced archival photographs and the playing styles of current and former student-athletes, incorporating elements inspired by alumni such as Raghib Ismail, Manti Te’o, Kyren Williams, and Xavier Watts.
Notre Dame released a statement explaining the symbolism behind the new emblem.
“The Leprechaun represents the tenacious and determined spirit of the Fighting Irish, a relentless desire to seize every opportunity with unity, clarity, and purpose though the odds be great or small. This logo, drawn from a legacy known around the world, represents Fighting Irish Football,” the statement read.
Fan reactions show mixed sentiment
Reactions to the update have been divided among supporters. Many traditionalist fans expressed disappointment, citing the long-standing history of the original logo.
Some social media users criticized the change as unnecessary or commercially motivated.
“Throwing 60 years of tradition out the window. All for money, lame,” wrote one fan.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Fighting Irish logo is the best in all of sports. Alternate logo? Sure,” another stated.
Other fans welcomed the redesign, noting the potential for creative individuality across different sports.
“I kinda love it. Can’t wait to see fencing and lacrosse,” one supporter wrote.
The update is the first step in a planned series of changes to the university’s athletic branding, which will include sport-specific logos for each varsity team.
Notre Dame officials emphasized that the redesign balances respect for tradition with opportunities for modernization, reflecting the evolution of the athletic program while maintaining a connection to its historic identity.
Notre Dame football is scheduled to debut the new Leprechaun logo on September 13, 2025, when the Fighting Irish host Texas A&M at home.
The updated emblem represents both a continuation of the program’s heritage and a step toward a cohesive, contemporary visual identity for the university’s athletics.
By integrating historical inspiration with new design elements, Notre Dame aims to honor its legacy while appealing to a modern audience of fans, players, and alumni alike.
