Lídr Oilers ale v tuto chvíli slevil na 12,5 milionu ročně, aby měl kolem sebe konkurenceschopný mančaft, který může získat Stanley Cup. Nový kontrakt naběhne od sezony 2026-27.
A platový strop v NHL bude dále růst, v ročníku 2027-28 má být už 113,5 milionu dolarů. Pak může McDavid podepsat smlouvu, kde se finančně opravdu zahojí. Teď mu jde ale hlavně o pohár, dvakrát v řadě totiž s Edmontonem ztroskotal ve finále na Floridě, loni v sedmi, letos v šesti zápasech.
„Naše cesta pokračuje,“ napsal lídr Oilers na X těsně před oficiálním oznámením dohody.
Osmadvacetiletý fenomén měl nárok uzavřít novou smlouvu už od 1. července, ale 27. srpna zopakoval, že nechce nic uspěchat.
„Na konci června jsem řekl, že si na to hodlám vzít nějaký čas a všechno si projít. Mám v úmyslu vyhrát s Edmontonem. To je moje jediná priorita, snad kromě zisku zlaté medaile s Kanadou. Vše proberu s rodinou, agentem a všemi zúčastněnými. Pěkně pomalu,“ prohlásil McDavid, který v 712 zápasech základní části nasbíral 1082 bodů (361+721) a v 96 zápasech play off 150 bodů (44 gólů+106 asistencí).
Získal třikrát Hart Trophy jako nejužitečnější hráč sezony, čtyřikrát Ted Lindsay Award podle hlasování členů Hráčské asociace NHL a pětkrát Art Ross Trophy jako nejproduktivnější hráč. V roce 2024 se stal držitelem Conn Smythe Trophy pro MVP play off, přestože stál na poražené straně.
„Connor je nejlepší hráč NHL, její nejdůležitější hráč, náš kapitán, vůdce a naše priorita číslo jedna,“ prohlásil generální manažer Edmontonu Stan Bowman.
Teď má jeho superstar tři roky na to, aby Oilers dovedla na vrchol.
