Andrey Rublev, como el resto de tenistas rusos nacidos en los noventa, creció teniendo como ídolo a Marat Safin, exnúmero 1 del mundo y campeón de dos Grand Slam: US Open, 2000 y el Abierto de Australia 2005. Fernando Vicente, entrenador de Rublev desde su saltó al profesionalismo, sabía de la admiración de su jugador por Safin.
Es por ello que en 2017, durante una sesión en el 4Slam Tennis de Gavà, se presentó con Marat. Este se ejercitó con Andrey y se inmortalizaron después en una foto para la historia y en la que también aparece Karen Khachanov, Vicente y Galo Blanco, su agente.
Safin se incorpora oficialmente la semana que viene al equipo de Rublev en el Masters 1000 de Montecarlo, que marca el inicio de la gira europea de tierra. Cabe recordar que Andrey ganó el título en el principado en la edición de 2023.
El encuentro del mes de julio
La idea de que Marat se uniera al cuerpo técnico del tenista moscovita nace el pasado mes de julio, tras la disputa de Wimbledon donde perdió en el debut con el argentino Francisco Comesaña, el 122 de la ATP.
La pérdida de los nervios en sus partidos calcaba los capítulos vividos por Safin a lo largo de su carrera. Se monta una reunión para que el campeón de dos grandes le explique a Rublev sus vivencias y cómo ve su situación desde fuera. El encuentro resulta tan positivo que es un inicio hacia el paso final que ha sido la unión en el TMS de Montecarlo. Marat compartirá banquillo junto a Beto Martín.
Todos partieron ayer desde Barcelona. Antes de instalarse en Mónaco, disputará una exhibición de la UTS. Andrey se ve reflejado en Safin y viceversa -este último confesó haber roto más de 1.000 raquetas- y eso ayuda, además de la amistad que une al extenista con Vicente.
Retirado de la competición con 29 años por culpa de la rodilla, la única experiencia de Safin en la banda fue como capitán de Rusia en la ATP Cup de 2020, justo antes de la pandemia. Y es que del tenis pasó a la política. El exjugador se convirtió en diputado en su país. En 2011 fue elegido diputado del Parlamento ruso por el partido oficialista Rusia Unida. En 2016, fue reelegido, pero un año después decidió abandonar el cargo.
En el equipo de Rublev se confía y mucho en que la presencia de Marat le ayudará a mejorar en el aspecto mental. Andrey siempre ha sido un jugador muy profesional y que da el máximo en cada uno de los entrenamientos.
Sin ir más lejos, es el preferido de Carlos Alcaraz para preparar los torneos porque ambos se llevan al límite. La disponibilidad de Safin y la necesidad de su presencia por parte del número nueve del ranking marcará sus viajes a los próximos torneos.
Se espera que también estén juntos en el Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, que aparece en el calendario del 14 al 20. El mayor talento que dio la Federación Rusa de Tenis vuelve a la ATP. Eso siempre será una buena noticia.
