The 49ers remain one of the most formidable teams in the NFC. Despite battling several high-profile injuries, San Francisco leads the NFC West with a 4-1 record. Still, the front office is looking to strengthen its pass rush by targeting none other than Trey Hendrickson.
The Niners appear poised for a deep playoff run. With Mac Jones stepping in for the injured Brock Purdy, the team has dominated nearly all of its opponents with minimal resistance.
Their only loss came in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, 26-21. In their other games, the defense has allowed just 18.3 points per game.
However, the defensive line took a major hit in Week 3 when star defensive end Nick Bosa tore his ACL, potentially sidelining him for the rest of the season. That’s where Hendrickson enters the picture.
49ers exploring elite pass rusher options
According to The Athletic insider Dianna Russini, “49ers GM John Lynch says the team is exploring trade options on the pass rusher market ahead of the trade deadline.”
But Lynch isn’t looking for just any pass rusher. He’s aiming high. “I expect them to check on the availability of Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson,” Russini added.
Hendrickson, a Florida Atlantic alum, is a nine-year veteran, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2024.
Last season, he led the NFL with 17.5 sacks and signed a one-year, $30 million contract extension with the Bengals after a lengthy holdout.
Could Hendrickson land in San Francisco?
Hendrickson is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. San Francisco could capitalize on Cincinnati’s fading playoff hopes.
The Bengals sit at 2-3 and second in the AFC North. To make matters worse, quarterback Joe Burrow is out for the season with a toe injury. Cincinnati was forced to trade veteran Joe Flacco from the Cleveland Browns in an emergency move.
Their chances of a deep postseason run now look slim. Given the circumstances, the stars may be aligning for the 49ers to land the missing piece in their Super Bowl puzzle.
