Rumors connecting Deion Sanders to an NFL coaching job seem to surface every time a major team fires its head coach, but one of the most talked-about scenarios involving Deion leading the Dallas Cowboys appears to be off the table.
Before Brian Schottenheimer‘s promotion from offensive coordinator to head coach, reports suggested that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had set his sights on Sanders as a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy.

The move would have been a full-circle story for Jones and Sanders, who teamed up to bring a Super Bowl title to Dallas in the mid-1990s.
Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999, earning four All-Pro and four Pro Bowl selections while helping secure the franchise’s fifth championship. His bond with Jones has remained strong over the years, which fueled speculation that “Coach Prime” could return to Dallas – this time with a headset instead of a helmet.
But that idea quickly faded after Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension with the University of Colorado, solidifying his future in college football and making him one of the sport’s highest-paid coaches.
Shilo Sanders ends the speculation
If there was any lingering hope that Deion might one day make the jump to the NFL, his son Shilo recently shut it down. During a Twitch livestream, a fan commented, “Hope your dad coaches in the NFL.” Shilo didn’t hesitate to respond.
“That’s probably not going to happen,” he said, effectively ending the conversation before it began.
The comment aligns with what Deion himself has expressed several times in recent interviews. While some fans and analysts continue to dream of seeing him on an NFL sideline, Sanders has made it clear that his heart lies in mentoring college players rather than managing professionals.
“The only way I would consider is to coach my sons – not son, sons,” Deion said earlier this year on Good Morning America. “[The door isn’t closed but] I love Colorado. I love my Buffaloes, I love everything that we’re building.”
