Texas Tech is calling on its backup quarterback again, this time at Arizona State. Will Hammond will start in place of Behren Morton, who is still recovering from a leg injury that limited him in practice this week, according to multiple reports.
Live from Athens, Georgia, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Saturday morning on “College GameDay” that Morton will be available in an emergency situation against the Sun Devils. Thamel also noted ASU will have its starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, back in the fold.

Leavitt didn’t play last week in a 42-10 road loss to Utah.
No. 7 Texas Tech beat the then-No. 16 Utes last month, thanks to the heroics of Hammond. The dual-threat redshirt freshman took over for an injured Morton in the third quarter.
When he entered the game, the Red Raiders were up just 10-3. They pulled away with him quarterbacking, putting a sloppy, turnover-ridden first half in the rear view mirror. Hammond completed 13-of-16 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for 61 yards on eight carries.
Texas Tech won 34-10, recording its first win in a ranked matchup since 2008.
Hammond has thrown a pass in five of the Red Raiders’ six games this season. The Austin, Texas, native replaced Morton again last week against Kansas, scoring twice on the ground in a 42-17 victory.

A shoulder injury sidelined Morton for last season’s Liberty Bowl, which Hammond started instead. Hammond also took first-team reps in spring practice while Morton healed up this offseason.
While the Red Raiders have a proven backup quarterback to take the field, they will be without Skyler Gill-Howard after the senior defensive tackle reportedly underwent ankle surgery this week.
That’s a blow to a Texas Tech defense that enters the weekend tied for sixth nationally in fewest points per game allowed and ranked fourth in fewest yards per play allowed.
