It’s official: The Kansas City Chiefs will not partake in this season’s NFL playoffs. It’s the first time a postseason won’t feature the Chiefs since 2014, marking the end of an insane run under head coach Andy Reid. This season, too many things went wrong for the team, capped off with Patrick Mahomes tearing his ACL in the game that sunk the Chiefs’ season.
Mahomes isn’t expecting to miss any time next season, but one down season is enough for fans to call this the end of the Chiefs’ dynasty. Some saw it coming, pointing out that regression was going to hit hard after Kansas City won so many one-score games in recent years that easily could have swung the other way. It certainly did in 2025. But the manner in which the Chiefs lost has called into question Reid’s job security, which may seem insane to some and justified to others.

Has Andy Reid lost his creativity on offense?
A head coach who has had the type of success Reid has is allowed to have one down season in over a decade. That’s why many are calling the idea of firing Reid “ridiculous” and “bonkers”. But some analysts can’t help but wonder if the game has passed Reid by, at least on offense. There’s been a notable lack of creativity within the Chiefs offense, with Reid’s scheme relying on concepts that simply don’t work as well now than they did in the past.
While there’s more at play than just Reid getting a bit stale with his play designs and play calling, the numbers definitely reflect the idea that he needs to try new concepts. Mahomes’ last three seasons have been a far cry from his MVP form in 2018 and 2022. This season was supposed to come with a revitalization of the Chiefs’ deep passing game, but that never fully came to fruition.
With Mahomes coming back from a major knee injury in 2026, Reid may not be able to count on the quarterback’s athleticism and playmaking ability outside the pocket to save the offense so frequently. That means a revamping of offensive ideas will be needed from the soon-to-be 68-year-old head coach.
