„Ein Jahr ohne Titel ist ein schlechtes Jahr für Kiel!“
Handball-Star Patrick „BamBam“ Wiencek (36) weiß, was für den deutschen Rekord-Pokalsieger (12x) beim Lidl Final4 am Wochenende in Köln auf dem Spiel steht.
Im Halbfinale warten am Samstag die Rhein-Neckar Löwen (16.10 Uhr, live bei Dyn/Anzeige und ARD), Pokalsieger 2023.

„Die Bundesliga hat dieses Jahr gezeigt, wie viel möglich ist. Man kann gegen jede Mannschaft verlieren und wir werden die Löwen sicher nicht unterschätzen“, sagt Wiencek, der im Sommer nach 15 Jahren Bundesliga mit über 1500 Toren seine Karriere beendet.
In der Liga gab’s gegen die Löwen je Sieg und Niederlage. Der THW-Trumpf in Köln? Wiencek: „Wir haben eine gute Mannschaft. Wenn wir mit der richtigen Einstellung reingehen, dann können wir gegen jede Mannschaft gewinnen.“

2012 kam der Junge aus dem Ruhrpott, in Duisburg geboren, nach Kiel. Mit dem THW hamsterte der weiße Riese (2,01 m) Titel wie kaum ein anderer. Meisterschaft (6x), Pokal (4x), Champions League (1x). Elf in zwölf Jahren – eine gute Quote, für den Branchen-Primus Kiel aber nicht immer gut genug.

„Es wäre schon gut, wenn wir das Turnier gewinnen“, erklärt der 36-Jährige, dessen komplette Familie („musste zehn Karten organisieren“) das finale Finale begleitet.
Seine Liebsten mit dem Pokal zu beschenken, soweit denkt er noch nicht. Die Löwen sind das erste Endspiel. „Wir müssen von Anfang an da sein, auch emotional. Das Mentale ist extrem wichtig an diesem Wochenende. Wenn wir unsere Leistung bringen, dann wird es schwierig, uns zu schlagen. Dafür müssen wir mit der Einstellung und mit dem Gefühl reingehen, dass wir jedes Spiel gewinnen können.“

Dass der THW Kiel, trotz der Erfolgs-Historie, nicht jedes Jahr eine Trophäe in die Höhe stemmen kann, ist Wiencek bewusst. „Man muss den anderen Mannschaften wirklich Respekt zollen, was sie für enorme Qualität haben und wie professionell der Handball geworden ist. Das war früher ein bisschen anders. Da gab es ein, zwei gute Mannschaften, die immer vorgeprescht sind und die Meisterschaft und Pokal unter sich ausgemacht haben.“
