Toronto atacó primero por medio de Federico Bernardeschi. El internacional italiano completó una carrera improvisada por la defensa de los Herons, mostrando agilidad y habilidad antes de batir con un potente disparo al portero de Miami, Drake Callender.
La respuesta de Messi llegó tres minutos después. Fue de fuerza bruta más que de habilidad, y el capitán argentino lo celebró como corresponde. La clave del gol no fue cómo lo anotó, sino lo que significó para la historia.
El gol fue el tercero de Messi en la temporada de la MLS, junto con dos asistencias en solo cuatro partidos con el Inter Miami en lo que va de temporada. Ha marcado en tres partidos consecutivos de liga, a pesar de lidiar con una persistente lesión en la ingle.
En resumen, el gol contra Toronto representó la anotación # 44 de Messi (24 goles más 20 asistencias) desde su llegada al Inter Miami en julio de 2023.

El Departamento de Comunicaciones Oficiales de la Major League Soccer publicó el siguiente anuncio en redes sociales durante el partido:
“Con su gol en el primer tiempo contra el Toronto FC, Lionel Messi del @InterMiamiCF (44 contribuciones de gol en 29 partidos) superó a Gonzalo Higuaín como el máximo goleador en la historia del club, logrando la hazaña en 38 partidos menos”.
Este fue un logro más que se suma a la inigualable carrera futbolística de Messi. El campeón del mundo también llevó al Inter Miami a su primer gran trofeo en 2023, y se convirtió en el máximo goleador histórico del club durante la temporada 2024.
Si bien fue un resultado decepcionante ante la afición local en Fort Lauderdale, el gol de Messi fue suficiente para mantener el invicto de las Garzas en la liga durante sus primeros seis partidos (4 victorias, 2 empates).
El Inter Miami jugará de nuevo en casa su próximo partido, cuando en el juego de vuelta de los cuartos de final de la Copa de Campeones de la CONCACAF reciba a LAFC este próximo miércoles 9 de abril por la noche. El LAFC tiene una ventaja global de 1-0 tras el partido de ida en Los Ángeles.
