El Gran Premio de las Américas parecía preparado para volver a ver a Marc Márquez reinar en su ‘jardín’. El ocho veces campeón del Mundo había sido el más rápido, por tercera vez consecutiva, en la sesión de clasificación, y se sentó en lo más alto del podio en la tercera carrera al ‘sprint‘ de la temporada. Sin embargo, pocos segundos antes de la salida, un inesperado incidente interrumpió la carrera.

Durante la vuelta de reconocimiento, el coche de seguridad chocó contra las barreras, provocando un retraso y obligando a los organizadores a sacar la bandera roja. El BMW M5 oficial del campeonato de motociclismo acabo con el morro dañado tras perder el control en la curva 14 del trazado de las Américas.
El choque cambió la situación en toda la parrilla
Aunque todos los pilotos estaban listos en la parrilla, algunos con neumáticos lisos y otros con neumáticos de lluvia, el accidente del coche de seguridad cambió la situación. Todos los competidores cambiaron a neumáticos lisos al ver que las condiciones de pista eran favorables.
