Kevin Durant to the San Antonio Spurs? The next NBA dynasty is just a blockbuster deal away

Kevin Durant is a hot commodity right now. With the legendary forward entering the final year of his contract with the Phoenix Suns, more than one team is trying to negotiate his services. Among them is the San Antonio Spurs, who need a player of Durant’s caliber to solidify their NBA championship hopes.

The Spurs haven’t reached the NBA playoffs in five seasons. The arrival of Victor Wembanyama reignited fans’ hopes for postseason glory, but untimely injuries sidelining the 2025 Rookie of the Year and rising star De’Aaron Fox crushed those expectations.

The anticipated return of Wembanyama and Fox should make the Spurs a formidable force in the Western Conference. However, some analysts argue that San Antonio is still not in the championship conversation. While the Spurs boast an exciting core of young players, their inexperience remains a concern. This is where Kevin Durant could make all the difference.

The Durant dilemma

According to Brett Siegel, an insider at ClutchPoints, “One dark-horse team worth mentioning in connection with Durant is the San Antonio Spurs.” Siegel elaborated, “After just making a big move to pair De’Aaron Fox with Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are poised to make even more moves this offseason.”

Siegel added, “There have been whispers among league personnel about the possibility of the Spurs pursuing Durant and creating the best offensive trio in the league alongside Fox and Wembanyama.” However, the Suns reportedly demand three draft picks and a young player in exchange for Durant.

As for the Spurs’ assets, Siegel highlighted Devin Vassell and Harrison Barnes as their most attractive trade chips. He suggested that San Antonio could also include Blake Wesley in the deal, along with three draft picks. While the price is steep, the potential payoff in a championship run might justify the cost.

Can the Spurs make it work?

The Spurs have eight draft picks available for trades between 2025 and 2031. Even after completing the proposed deal, the team would retain five picks, which is more than enough to address any future gaps created by the departure of Vassell, Barnes, and Wesley.

If Durant agrees to sign a multi-year contract, effectively ensuring that he finishes his career with the Spurs, the deal could be a win-win-win scenario for the player, the Spurs, and the Suns. Whether San Antonio is willing to make such a game-changing move remains to be seen.

2025 NFL MVP Stock Watch: Bo Nix has Broncos Streaking, Scrambling Into MVP Convo

Winners of 10 one-score games this season and riding an 11-game winning streak, it’s time to acknowledge the Denver Broncos are not the luckiest team in the NFL. Holding a 12-2 record, tops in the NFL, the Broncos are the best. And while the Broncos have one of the nastiest defenses in the NFL, one of the main reasons for Denver’s success has been the clutch performance of second-year quarterback Bo Nix. The Oregon product’s raw numbers aren't among the best in the league, but he's played well when it mattered the most, as he did against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. He threw for 302 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, posting a season-high 134.7 passer rating in the 34-26 victory. Nix's 11 straight wins ties Lamar Jackson (2019), Peyton Manning (1999) and Dan Marino (1984) for the longest win […]
