Richard Sherman didn’t expect to be spending his birthday reviewing security footage of an armed robbery. But that’s exactly what happened, and the former NFL cornerback is now asking the public for help.
On Monday, Sherman revealed on social media that his home had been broken into at gunpoint-with his wife and children inside. The 35-year-old shared a screen grab and video from his home security system, showing the masked suspects as they forced their way in.

House being robbed at gun point with my family in it isn’t what anyone wants for a birthday gift,” Sherman wrote on X. “Scary situation that my wife handled masterfully and kept my kids safe.
A Chilling Trend in the NFL
While Sherman’s story is alarming on its own, it’s part of a disturbing pattern. The FBI recently warned of a burglary spree targeting professional athletes. According to a February report by CBS Sports, at least nine NFL players-among them Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow-have had their homes burglarized in recent months.
Federal investigators believe the break-ins are tied to South American crime rings operating across the U.S. Seven Chilean nationals were charged last month in connection with a similar string of crimes. Typically, the burglars strike when they know the athletes are away.
What makes Sherman’s case even more alarming is the timing: his family was home, and the suspects were armed. It’s a shift in tactics that has law enforcement taking a closer look. Sherman didn’t specify whether he was home himself, but his message was clear-this wasn’t just a robbery, it was a terrifying violation of their safety
The LAPD has yet to identify the suspects but confirmed they’re working with federal agents due to the potential link with the organized ring. In the meantime, Sherman has received waves of support from fellow players and fans, including public messages from Russell Wilson and George Kittle.
Despite the trauma, Sherman’s focus remains on his family’s safety. “We’re shaken, but we’re safe,” he added. “That’s what matters most.”

But for him to last more than 102 picks and make it to Day 3 of the draft is the kind of development that invites conspiracy theories.
