El milagro del Cannes busca un nuevo capítulo: la final de la Coupe de France 2024-25. Y es que el equipo galo, tras eliminar a Grau-du-Roi, Olympique Alés, Grenoble, Lorient, Dives-Cabourg y Guingamp… se enfrenta ante el Stade Reims por un puesto en la finalísima de París, en el Stade de France. Una hazaña de seis rondas para un equipo… ¡de Cuarta División!.

La Costa Azul mira con orgullo a Cannes. Y no por el turimo o el icónico festival internacional de cine. Ahora en la Riviera Francesa toca hablar de fútbol. El Stade Pierre de Coubertin, con un nombre para la historia, presentó 9.000 espectadores en los cuartos de final ante el Guingamp. Ante el Reims, otro histórico del fútbol galo, se superará esa cifra.

“No voy a dar lecciones tácticas a mis jugadores, no esperen nada nuevo, no esperen nada. Sería increíblemente presuntuoso pensar que tenemos las soluciones para poner en peligro al Reims. ¡No! Vamos a jugar e intentaremos hacer lo que sabemos hacer, espero que estemos a la altura de las circunstancias”, declaraba en la previa del duelo el suizo Damien Ott, técnico del Cannes.

“Estamos de buen humor, es un partido para disfrutar, es una celebración”, afirmaba también en rueda de prensa el capitán del Cannes, Cheikh Ndoye. “No todo el mundo puede jugar una semifinal de Coupe contra un equipo de la Ligue 1, ¡es maravilloso!”, añadía. En caso de ganar, sería el quinto club ‘amateur’ en jugar una final de Copa en Francia tras Nîmes (1996), Calais (CFA, 2000), Amiens (2001), Quevilly (2012) y Les Herbiers (2018). El Calais, sin embargo, es el único que lo ha logrado desde Cuarta.

Fundado en 1902, son 122 años los que contemplan a ‘Les Dragons’. Y en esa vida centenaria, les ha pasado de todo. Fueron uno de los miembros fundadores de la Primera División del fútbol francés y ganaron la Coupe en 1932. En los 90, de hecho, eran un ‘equipo UEFA’. Pero desde 1998 no juegan en Ligue 1, y ahí empezó la caída a los infiernos.

En vez de volver a Ligue 1, descubrieron la Tercera División por primera vez en su historia y los problemas económicos arrasaron la entidad blanquirroja. En 2011, el primer descenso administrativo; en 2014, otro. 17 años después de perder el puesto en Ligue 1… estaban en la Séptima División. 

Ahora, en 2025, bajo propiedad del Grupo Friedkin (los dueños estadounidenses de la Roma y el Everton), vuelven poco a poco a la élite. Y aunque el ascenso a Tercera les queda lejos (están a ocho puntos del Le Puy, líder de su grupo), el equipo que en su día vio ‘crecer’ a Zinedine Zidane, Patrick Vieira, Johan Micoud, Gaël Clichy, Sébastien Frey o Jonathan Zebina… por fin sonríe.
